HMAS IPSWICH  J186 and B244

  • Built by Evans Deakin, Brisbane.
  • Laid down 6 April 1941
  • Launched 11 August 1941 by Mrs.H.S.Foll, wife of Minister for the Interior.
  • Commissioned 13 June 1942.


Joined Royal Navy Eastern Fleet in Persian Gulf, the Mediterranean and the Sicily invasion. Attacked by 48 German dive bombers. In Indian Ocean in 1943 and rescued 134 survivors from SS PESHAWAR. With HMAS LAUNCESTON and HMIS JUMNA she attacked and sank Japanese submarine RO-410 off Vizagapatam 11 February 1944. Served in RN Pacific Fleet in 1945 and was in Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender.
Sold to Dutch Navy in 1946 as "MOROTAI" and later in the Indonesian Navy as "HANG-TUAH." Sunk by rebel planes April 28 1958, off Balikpapan.

HMAS JUNEE  J362 and M362

  • Built by Poole and Steele, Sydney
  • Laid down 12 February 1943
  • Launched 16 November 1943 by Mrs.J.S.Rosevear, wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives
  • Commissioned 11 April 1944


Served in Darwin, New Guinea and the Borneo campaign. Helped rescue POWs from Ambon in 1945. Took part in Japanese surrender in the Celebes. From 1953 to 1957 she was stationed in Fremantle as a training ship.
Sold for conversion to a fisheries ship in 1958, and scuttled 20 miles west of Rottnest Island, Western Australia 7 September 1968.

HMAS KALGOORLIE J192 and B245

  • Built by BHP, Whyalla, South Australia
  • Laid down 26 April 1940
  • Launched 7 August 1941 by Mrs.T.Playford, wife of the South Australian Premier.
  • Commissioned 7 April 1942


Convoy duties on east and northern coast. Landed troops and supplies in Timor. Rescued survivors from HMAS VOYAGER, and HMAS ARMIDALE. Served in British Pacific Fleet.
Sold to the Dutch navy in 1946 as "TERNATE", renamed "PATTI UNIS " in Indonesian Navy. Fate unknown.

Named after Kalgoorlie, Western Australia


HMAS KAPUNDA  J218 and M218

  • Built by Poole and Steele, Sydney
  • Laid down 27 August 1941
  • Launched 23 June 1942 by Mrs.M.I.Quick, wife of State MP for Balmain.
  • Commissioned 11 October 1942.


Served on Australian convoys then in New Guinea. Involved in major Japanese air attack on Milne Bay, April 1943. Crew fought fires in ammunition ship SS GORGON and assisted in towing GORGON to Cairns. Bombarded Japanese positions on Kakar Island, 1944, and Galela Bay, 1945.
Sold to Japan for scrap in May 1962.

HMAS KATOOMBA J 204 and M 204

  • Built by Poole and Steele, Sydney
  • Laid down 6 Spetember 1940
  • Launched 16 April 1941 by Mrs.H.Lloyd, deputy Mayoress of Katoomba
  • Commissioned 17 December 1941.


With HMAS DELORAINE and LITHGOW, successfully attacked Japanese submarine I-124 off Darwin, January 1942. While hunting second submarine she collided with US tanker "PECOS". While in being repaired in a floating dock in Darwin, the ship was attacked during Japanese air attack. Attacked again off Buna and Oro Bay by dive bombers. After the war she served as a mine sweeper in Bass Strait, New Guinea, Solomons, Torres Strait and Great Barrier Reef until 1948.
Sold to Hong Kong Rolling Mills as scrap in 1957.

  • Launched 9 July 1943 by Mrs.G.Lawson, wife of the Minister for Transport.
  • Commissioned 26 January 1944.


Served on East Coast then in New Guinea. In September 1944 surveyed Jacquinot Bay preparatory to landings. Bombarded Buka Island in Solomons in May and June 1945.
Sold to New Zealand Navy in 1952 as HMNZS KIAMA. Used as a training and fisheries protection vessel. Sold 1979.

Named after Kiama, New South Wales


HMAS LATROBE J 234 and M 234

  • Built by Morts Dock, Sydney.
  • Laid down 27 January 1942
  • Launched 19 June 1942 by Rev.A.Rix, St.Johns, Balmain
  • Commissioned 6 November 1942.


Replaced ARMIDALE in Darwin. Attacked by Japanese aircraft between Darwin and Thursday Island. Bombarded Borneo and took part in landings at Tarakan and Balikpapan. Involved in attempts to free POWs at Ambon. After the war she served at Flinders Naval Depot as a training ship until 1953.
Sold as scrap in 1957 to Hong Kong Rolling Mills.

HMAS LAUNCESTON   J 179 and B 246

  • Built by Evans Deakin, Brisbane.
  • Laid down 23 December 1941
  • Launched 30 June 1941 by Mrs.W.Forgan-Smith, wife of the Queensland Premier.
  • Commissioned 9 April 1942 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Percy G. Collins RANR(S).


Served on East coast until 1942, then joined British Eastern Fleet doing convoy work in Colombo, Trinconmalee, Bombay, Aden, Karachi and Bahrein. Successfully attacked Japanese submarine RO-110 with IPSWICH and HMIS JUMNA. In 1945 served in British Pacific Fleet. After the war she swept mines in Hong Kong.
Sold to Turkish Navy as "AYANCIK" and later renamed "HAMIT NACI". Withdrawn from service in 1965.

HMAS LISMORE J 145 and B 247

  • Built by Morts Dock, Sydney
  • Laid down 26 February 1940
  • Launched 10 August 1940, by Mrs Muirhead-Gould, wife of the Commodore-in-Charge, Sydney
  • Commissioned 24 January 1941 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Stanley H. Crawford MBE RANR(S).


Joined British East Indies Station in June 1941, based in Colombo and later in the Red Sea. In May 1943 she served in the Mediterranean and was involved in the Sicily landings. Attacked by 48 dive bombers. Rejoined Eastern Fleet in October 1943 and in 1945 served in British Pacific Fleet.
Sold to Dutch Navy in 1946 as "BATJAN". Withdrawn from service in 1958.

Named after Lismore, New South Wales


HMAS LITHGOW   J 206 and M 206

  • Built by Morts Dock, Sydney
  • Laid down 19 August 1940
  • Launched 21 December 1940 by Mrs.W.S.Bennett, wife of director Morts Dock.
  • Commissioned 14 June 1941


Swept German mines near Hobart. Convoy duty East Coast and minesweeping in Darwin. Attacked submarine I-124. Served in Oro Bay landings. Searched for "CENTAUR" survivors and salvaged HMAS COLAC off Bougainville. Bombarded Buka Island. Put into reserve in 1948.
Sold to Hong Kong Delta Shipping Company for scrap in 1956.
