HMAS ARARAT

  • Built by Evans Deakin, Brisbane, Queensland.
  • Laid down 6 July 1942
  • Launched 20 February 1943 by Mrs.A.W.Fadden, wife of the leader of the Country Party.
  • Commissioned 16 June 1943 under the command of Lieutenant Norman M. Muzzell RANR(S).


The only RAN corvette to have a K prefix. Served mainly in New Guinea area. Put into reserve in 1947. She was sold in 1961 and was used for slavage work in Darwin Harbour before she towed a floating crane to Japan in 1961 where she was broken up for scrap.

HMAS ARMIDALE J240


HMAS ARMIDALE

  • Built by Morts Dock, Sydney, NSW.
  • Laid down 1 September 1941
  • Launched 23 January 1942 by Rev.A.G.Rix
  • Commissioned 11 June 1942 under the command of Lieutenant Commander David H. Richards RANR(S).

  Convoy duties around Darwin and New Guinea. Was to carry extra Dutch troops to East Timor and rescue Australian commandos. Sunk by Japanese aircraft off East Timor on 1/12/42, with the loss of 100 lives.

HMAS BALLARAT J184 and B236

  • Built by Williamstown Dockyard, Victoria.
  • Laid down 17 April 1940
  • Launched 10 December 1940 by Mrs.A.Dunstan, wife of the Victorian Premier.
  • Commissioned 30 August 1941 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Alfred D. Barling RANR(S).

The first ship built by the Williamstown Naval Dockyard. On 14/2/1942 the ship rescued 215 survivors from MV DERRYMORE, including future PM, John Gorton. Ran aground May 24, 1942. Collided with HMS WHIMBREL, June 20, 1945. HMAS BALLARAT was in Tokyo Bay as a minesweeper for the surrender ceremonies in 1945. Paid off into the reserve in September 1946 and sold in 1947. Resold in 1950 and refitted for the Chinese coastal trade as the "CARMENCITA" but sale stopped by Korean War. Resold to John Manners and Co and scrapped in Sydney in 1953.

HMAS BATHURST J158

  • Built by Cockatoo Dockyard, Sydney
  • Laid down 10 February 1940
  • Launched 1 August 1940 by Mrs.A.B.Doyle, wife of the manager of the Garden Island dockyard.
  • Commissioned 6 December 1940 under the command of Lieutenant Commander A.V. Bunyan RANR(S).

First corvette built, so the name given to the entire class. Served with the Royal Navy as part of the Red Sea force. Sold for scrap in Sydney in 1948 and sank at her mooring in Sydney Harbour, June 1950.

HMAS BENALLA J323 and M323

  • Built at Williamstown, Victoria
  • Laid down 23 March 1942
  • Launched 19 December 1942 by Mrs.A.S.Drakeford, wife of the Minister for Air.
  • Commissioned 27 April 1943 under the command of Acting Lieutenant Commander Leslie N. Morison RANR(S).

Equipped as a survey ship she had a large chart room and did not carry minesweeping gear. She was used to survey landing areas in the Pacific war including Lae, Seeadler Harbour,and Biak.
Scrapped in Tokyo in 1962

HMAS BENDIGO J187 and B237

  • Built at Morts Dock, Sydney
  • Laid down 12 August 1940
  • Launched 1 March 1941 by Dame Mary Hughes, wife of the Minister for the Navy.
  • Commissioned 10 May 1941 under the command of Lieutenant Commander James A.R. Patrick RANR(S).

Convoy duty in Australia, New Guinea and involved in the Philippines.
In 1947 sold to a Hong Kongand company and renamed "CHEUNG HING". She was later acquired by the Navy of the People's Republic of China, converted from a merchant ship and rearmed for naval service under the name of LOYANG. Last listed in 1988.

  • Built by Walkers, Maryborough, Qld.
  • Laid down 9 February 1942
  • Launched 11 July 1942 by Mrs.George Crittall.
  • Commissioned 9 November 1942 under the command of Lieutenant Gordon L. Olsen RANR.

Convoy duty in Australia and New Guinea. Landed troops in Buna area as part of Operation Lilliput.
Sold to Hong Kong for scrap in 1956.

HMAS BROOME J191

  • Built by Evans Deakin, Brisbane, Queensland.
  • Laid down 3 May 1941
  • Launched 6 September 1941 by Mrs.M.J.McKew, wife of the works manager Evans Deakin.
  • Commissioned 29 July 1942 under the command of Lieutenant Commander R.A. Denovan RANVR, but remained in the builder's hands until accepted by the Royal Australian Navy on 19 August 1942.

Served in New Guinea, Borneo and Hong Kong. Ran aground near Brisbane in 1944 and collided with HMAS AUSTRALIA in Seeadler Harbor on July 6, 1944. Transferred to the Turkish Navy in 1946 as "ALANYA". Decommisioned 1975. Fate unknown.

HMAS BUNBURY J241 and M241

  • Built by Evans Deakin, Brisbane, Queensland.
  • Laid down 1 December 1941
  • Launched 16 May 1942 by Mrs.F.A.Cooper, wife of the Queensland Treasurer.
  • Commissioned 3 January 1943.


Served northern Australia and New Guinea. Damaged by depth charge off Fitzroy Island, 1943. Collided with HM Submarine SEA ROVER off Fremantle, December 17, 1944. Bombarded Cape Boram near Wewak in May 1945.
Sold to Tokyo for scrap in 1961.

  • Launched 1 December 1941, by Mrs.W.S.Hurwood, wife of Evans Deakin director.
  • Commissioned 12 September 1942


Convoy duty in Australia and New Guinea. Involved in abortive attempt to rescue POW's from Ambon.
Scrapped in Japan 1962.
