THE SHIP'S LOG 1942

JANUARY 1942

  • January 1-11: In Mort's Dock, Sydney, undergoing repairs.
  • January 12: Proceeded to Chowder Bay, then to No.5 buoy.
  • January 15: On DG range.
  • January 16-17: Chowder Bay, deperming.
  • January 18: On DG range.
  • January 19: Lt.C.Guille took over command from Lt.G.E.Owen.
  • January 20: Adjusted compasses at Berry Bay.
  • January 21: Loaded ammunition.
  • January 22: Duty ship, to sea with A/S class.
  • January 23-24: At No.7 buoy, Sydney.
  • January 25: Duty ship, A/S patrols.
  • January 26: Watson's Bay, waiting for moderate weather.
  • January 27: Minesweeping in Sydney Harbour.
  • January 28: Duty ship, A/S patrols at sea.
  • January 29 - 31: Minesweeping, Sydney Harbour.

FEBRUARY 1942

  • February 1 - 19: Duty ship every third day, patrols outside 1900 to 0700.
  • February 20: Joined with HMS WARSPITE to provide A/S protection into harbour.
  • February 22: Provided A/S protection for MV MERKUR.
  • February 23: Parted from MERKUR 150 miles to sea, returned to Sydney.
  • February 24: Arrived Sydney.
  • February 25: Duty A/S vessel.
  • February 26: Provided A/S protection for HMS WARSPITE during firing practice.
  • February 27: At No.6 buoy.
  • February 28: Duty A/S vessel.

MARCH 1942

  • March 1: A/S patrol 0001-0900, back to Garden Island for engine repairs.
  • March 2: Watson's Bay, second duty ship.
  • March 3: Duty A/S vessel, patrolling at night outside Sydney.
  • March 4: With YANDRA and screened cruiser TROMP (LE TRIOMPHANT?) to Heads. Joined BINGERA at sea.
  • March 5: At sea. Met WESTRALIA and convoy for A/S protection.
  • March 6: Returned to Sydney.
  • March 7: Duty A/S vessel.
  • March 8: At 1725 proceeded to Noumea.
  • March 9: At sea.
  • March 10: At sea. Rendezvoused with HMAS GEELONG. Proceeded in company.
  • March 11: At sea.
  • March 12: Off Bulari, and commenced minesweeping in channels.
  • March 13: Minesweeping approaches to Noumea with HMAS GEELONG.
  • March 14: At Noumea.
  • March 14-15: A/S sweeps off Noumea.
  • March 16: Screened US transport SS Mc ANDREW with GEELONG, minesweeping off Bulari.
  • March 17: Piloted heavy cruiser USS PENSACOLA and No.377. (PENSACOLA was part of the YORKTOWN carrier group that had just completed a surprise raid on Lae and Salamana on March 10.)
  • March 18: Performed A/S duties.
  • March 19: Patrols off Bulari with GEELONG. A/S sweeps all night.
  • March 20: Screened US transport SS JOHN ERICSON, cruising all night.
  • March 21: A/S duties at Bulari anchorage.
  • March 22: Anchored inside reef.
  • March 23: Met US transport SS JACOB LUCHENBACH and escorted her to Bulari. (This ship was sunk in a collision in July 1953, and oil leakage from its bunkers is still causing pollution problems off San Francisco.)
  • March 24: Cruised all day in low visibility trying to intercept US transport SS WILLIAM CLARK (US Liberty ship torpedoed November 4, 1942 with the loss of 33 crew).
  • March 25: To Noumea with GEELONG for A/S harbour defence duties.
  • March 26-27: Continous A/S harbour defence while GEELONG had boiler cleaning and minor repairs.
  • March 28: Screened US transport SS MEMPHIS CITY. Swept Bulari passage.March 29: Met US transport SS MERRIWEATHER LEWIS (US Liberty ship torpedoed in North Atlantic, March 3, 1943, with the loss of 72 crew) and screened SS WILLIAM CLARK to seaward.
  • March 30: Sweeping of Bulari, then to Noumea for refuelling.
  • March 31: Ran aground off Amedee Lighthouse, all day endeavouring to and preparing to refloat.

APRIL 1942

  • April 1-3: At Noumea performing harbour defence duties.
  • April 4: Landed 20 depth charges, then to Bulari and commenced transferring stores to GEELONG.
  • April 5-9: On passage to Sydney. Sighted two US aircraft enroute.
  • April 9: Secured No.7 buoy, Port Jackson.
  • April 10: De-ammunitioned, then to Chapman's Drydock.April 10-14: In dry dock.
  • April 14: Left dock, completed engine repairs.
  • April 15-30: Along side Chapman's Wharf. All members of the ship's company were granted leave - average one week.
