The
Melba Conservatorium Library offers books, journals, music
scores, recordings and listening facilities, together with
computing services suited to music students. The Library archives
hold extensive memorabilia of Dame Nellie Melba, Professor
G.W. Marshall-Hall and Fritz Hart as well as historical photographs,
diaries and scrapbooks of the Melbourne music scene from 1900-1950.

Melba
Conservatorium Library is located in the main building, and
is for use by students and staff for borrowing of materials,
reference or listening any time when the library is open. Library
opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
The library is closed for lunch each day at 1pm for 30 minutes.
The Library also holds many old, valuable and ornate editions,
several special collections, and archives of substantial historical
significance. The Melba Conservatorium Library is registered
with the CAVAL reciprocal-borrowing
scheme, so that through the Melba Library eligible students
may also borrow material from other participating Victorian
Libraries. As members of an affiliated institution, Melba students
may borrow from any campus Library of Victoria
University upon presentation of their Melba Conservatorium
identity card.

>Meet
the Librarian
John
Nieuwenhuizen is the Melba part-time Library Manager.
After thirteen years in the position of Library Manager
at MacRobertson Girls' High School, Mr Nieuwenhuizen
retired at the end of 2000. Prior to this, Mr Nieuwenhuizen
worked in a public library, as a teacher and as co-ordinator
of music education at the Victorian Correspondence School.
John has qualifications in Librarianship, English, Philosophy
and French. In his other life, he is known as a literary
translator.
