Introduction
The
broad aim of the course is to prepare musicians for several areas
of the current music industry. The main emphasis of the course is
on training for performance. Many graduates will also occupy roles
as private studio teachers, specialist music teachers in schools,
and providers of ancillary services such as arranging, incidental
composing, managing musical occasions, and administering enterprises
requiring music expertise.
Essentially,
the course is designed for talented, well-motivated people who have
completed secondary education. However, special entry may be allowed
to applicants with less than full secondary education if they have
completed an appropriate bridging course or suitable short courses
in music, or have been accepted as especially suited to the course.
Normally
the Diploma course occupies three years of full-time study, but
equivalent part-time arrangements may be negotiated. The first-year
of the diploma is full-fee, but HECS places are offered to second-year
and third-year diploma students, subject to available places.
Admission
requires an audition and interview as well as academic and AMEB
qualifications, or their equivalents. Overseas and interstate applicants
can submit a tape of performance with supporting documentation.
Diploma applicants who show skills beyond the entrance requirements
may be fast-tracked into a later year of the course.
Under
the terms of an affiliation agreement between the two institutions
and supporting legislation approved by the Governor-in-Council,
Victoria University will award a Diploma of Music, in affiliation
with the Melba Conservatorium of Music to students who satisfactorily
complete the Melba’s Diploma of Music course. However, this
course is not for any purposes a course of study at Victoria University;
and the award of the Diploma does not imply that students who enrol
in the course are students of Victoria University. The affiliation
agreement and supporting legislation do not give either party any
authority to act on behalf of the other.
