Introduction

In 1996 the Conservatorium developed, and Victoria University approved, a fourth year of study to articulate with the three-year Diploma course and lead to a Bachelor of Music degree. During this fourth year, which is available to local students on HECS, students further develop their technical mastery of voice or instrument to achieve a high level of artistic maturity. Graduates may take up professional employment with some advantage, or pursue a range of postgraduate programs in music.

Prerequisites
To be eligible for admission to candidature for the Bachelor of Music applicants must
(a) have qualified for the Diploma of Music of the Conservatorium with a credit-point weighted average mark of at least 70 in Year 3 and a mark of at least 70 for Chief Practical Study 2, or
(b) have completed studies elsewhere which are accepted by the Courses Committee of the Conservatorium as at least an equivalent preparation
Applicants are also required to attend an audition and interview (unless presenting a Year 3 recital in the year prior to admission.)

Duration
The fourth year of study may be undertaken as one year of full-time study or, with the Director’s approval, as two years of part-time study.

Administration
Candidates for the Bachelor of Music must become enrolled students of Victoria University, and must pay the General Service Fee levied by the University Council. However, the Conservatorium is responsible for teaching and assessing the course in accordance with details approved by the Academic Board of the University.

Under the terms of the Affiliation Agreement between the Conservatorium and the University, any student of the University who is undertaking studies at the Conservatorium for credit towards an award of the University shall in respect of those studies (including attendance at and participation in activities of the Conservatorium) be subject to the regulations of the Conservatorium. Candidates for the Bachelor of Music should therefore be familiar with the provisions of the Conservatorium’s General Academic Rules.

The Award
The Bachelor of Music is an award of Victoria University. Successful candidates who hold a Diploma of Music awarded by Victoria University will be required to surrender that award before receiving the Bachelor of Music degree.
