Renting is a common choice for many people. Some options are:
Shared accommodation: renting your own bedroom in a household already shared by a number of other tenants. Costs start from around $A100.00 per week. Additional expenses include gas, electricity, water, telephone charges as well as food and toiletries. You also may need to purchase bedroom furniture.
Another option is to find a house or flat to rent, either by yourself or setting up your own share house with fellow students or friends. Costs start from $A150.00 per week for a single bedroom flat (apartment) or from $A165.00 for a two bedroom house or flat.

A ‘bond’, equal to one calendar month’s rent, as well as one month’s rent in advance must be paid at the start of your rental agreement. Rental accommodation is usually unfurnished and may require the purchase of a refrigerator and household furniture.

Searching for rental accommodation:
The Age and The Herald-Sun newspapers each publish an extensive “Real Estate” section on Wednesdays and Saturdays which provide details of houses and flats for lease as well as ‘Share Accommodation’.
Local papers also have information on shared and rental accommodation. These are published weekly and are not as extensive as the listings provided in The Age newspaper but provide more localised information.

Most vacant houses and flats are managed by Real Estate Agents who you can visit to obtain current listings of rental properties and keys for inspection. Most Real Estate Agents will require a $A50.00 bond and identification before they release property keys to prospective applicants. If your application for accommodation through a Real Estate Agent is successful we recommend you keep copies of all correspondence, get receipts for all payments and keep a record of all contact with your agent or landlord.
Renting in Richmond and other inner city suburbs can be expensive. Locations further from Melbourne’s Central Business District may be cheaper. You may wish to consider the travelling time and costs involved from your chosen location to the Melba, as well as the availability of public transport services in the area.

The Melba is well serviced by public transport, with train, tram and bus services all within short walking distances from the campus.
