The tribunal hears appeals against decisions made by Commonwealth Employment Service and the Department of Social Security and Austudy. The decision must have been reviewed by an Authorised Review Officer of the DSS/CES before the Tribunal has the jurisdiction to review it.

The Ombudsman investigates complains about operations of State Government Departments and Statutory Authorities and also Local Government Authorities, including the actions of Council employees, but not of Councillors. FOI complaints are also investigated. Complaints must first be made to the relevant Department. If this doesn't result in a satisfactory outcome, the complaint may be taken to the Ombudsman.
