Maroondah's current bicycle paths

The location and surface of Maroondah's bike paths is most clearly seen on the Parks and Paths in Maroondah map. The following path lengths are estimates derived from the map. The paths are listed roughly in north-east to south-west order.

Type of path Length (km)
Off-road gravel 11.6
Off-road sealed 23.1
On-road 4.4
TOTAL 39.1

Name Length Comment (click photo to enlarge)
Brushy Creek 1.9km
(0.6km sealed)
Gravel from Bellara Dr to Diane Cr with short section on Bambra St around Barngeong Reserve. Sealed from Diane Cr to Manchester Rd with wooden bridge over a small creek alongside the railway. Peaceful riding with thick native vegetation. Some talk of extending north of Bellara Rd. Brushy Crk
Lincoln Rd 0.7km Cement path; quite pleasant for a roadside path.  Lincoln Rd
Croydon Rd 1.2km
Sealed path but beware the large bumps and bushes overgrowing the path in places. Frequent road crossings. Urban scenery. Maroondah's least appealing bike path but may be useful if you go to one of the schools along there.
Croydon Rd
Plymouth Rd 1.5km Sealed path alongside Plymouth Rd in fairly good condition. Plymouth Rd
Mullum Mullum Creek 5.2km
(2.7km unsealed)
Sealed from just west of Ringwood St to Suda Ave, gravel from there to Oban Rd then sealed to Highland Ave. Underpass at Ringwood St; road crossings elsewhere. Kalinda Rd and Oban Rd crossings each have a traffic island. Very pleasant path following the meandering Mullum Creek. Mullum Creek
Mt Dandenong Rd (East) 1.0km Short segments of sealed path perhaps useful for residents to access local shops. Mt Dandenong Rd E
Mt Dandenong Rd (West) 1.8km Maroondah's newest on-road bike lane extends from Ringwood Lake to Valda Ave. The lane continues at the Dublin Rd intersection between the turning lane and car lane with the stop marking in front of those of the other lanes so the cyclist is more visible. VicRoads plan to extend the lane further east. The Principle Bicycle Network is slowly becoming a reality. Mt Dandenong Rd W Start
Dorset Recreation Reserve 4.4km All gravel path that skirts the Melbourne Water retaining basin and golf course in a circuit. Great place for the kids to practice their cycling with just one road crossing - the entrance to the golf course.  Dorset Rec Rsv
Tarralla Creek
(was Croydon Main Drain)
5.0km Sealed but narrow from Canterbury Rd to Kandra St bridge;  newly resealed and widened to Oak Lane; gap to opposite Blue Mist Dr (consider crossing Bayswater Rd at pedestrian lights); access path to Yvonne Ave; path from Eastfield Rd to Vinter Ave is narrow and very rough; final section to Town Park  is newly sealed and widened. This path is improving but still needs a lot of work to close the gap and link it to the Dandenong Creek path.  Tarralla Crk
Ringwood Lake 1.8km Network of sealed paths mostly in excellent condition. Beware of pedestrians; it can be very busy. The access path across the railway line to Bedford Park has been recently sealed. Good access from the Mullum Creek path using the Mt Dandenong Rd and Maroondah Hwy lights and access path behind the noise wall on the north side of the Ringwood Bypass. Beautiful place for a picnic. Ringwood Lake
Heathmont Railway Trail 2.8km Sealed but bumpy in places. The signs say "Heathmont Rail Trail" but it is not a rail trail since the railway still operates. Convenient access to Heathmont shops. Skirts a lot of native bushland. Heathmont Railway
Dandenong Creek 9.2km
(3.2km unsealed)
Starts at a dead-end 100m east of Memory Ct. Gravel from there to Colchester Rd. All sealed downstream from there to Boronia Rd. Parallel path on the north side from HE Parker Reserve to Wantirna Rd is gravel with undulations. Uses main road bridges as underpasses except Dorset Rd which has a dedicated underpass but beware flooding there especially if entering at east end since west end is deeper. Also beware flooding just west of the train line. Fantastic path; picturesque despite the creek no longer having its meandering course. Dandenong Creek
Heatherdale Rd 2.6km On-road bike lane from Centre Rd to Molan St on both east and west sides. Take care at the traffic lights at Canterbury Rd - they can change back to red before you have had time to cross the intersection. Heatherdale Rd
