Maroondah BUG (Bicycle User Group) is a local community group that encourages cycling in and around the City of Maroondah, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. We like bikes and we want others to as well.
BUGs aim to promote the bicycle as a legitimate and healthy form of transport, to make cycling as pleasurable and as safe as possible and to encourage more people to ride bikes. To find out more about BUGs visit Bicycle Victoria's web site and enter BUG in the search field at the top of the page.
Maroondah BUG is currently an advocacy and advisory group only. If you are looking for a group to go riding with -sorry- we don't currently run organised rides but you may find what you need on our Clubs page. We may run occasional survey rides to check out local cycling facilities and at some stage I hope we will organise rides to promote the Maroondah bicycle network. Regardless, if you are a local or aspiring Maroondah cyclist we hope you find information of interest on this web site.
Possible Projects
Some examples of things we might work on, depending on the level of interest:
- identify safety issues and report these to the relevant authority
- give feedback on plans for bike paths that will accompany freeway construction
- encourage cycling to schools and workplaces, even if only on designated days
- propose bicycle parking rails in shopping areas
- assist/report progress on implementation of the Maroondah Bicycle Strategy
- survey local cyclists for their input
- estimate usage of bike paths etc
- assist or advise on a specific engineering work
- ...or whatever your idea may be!
Joining
Anyone with an interest in bicycles who supports our aims can join our group. There is no membership fee. To join, it is recommended you join our mailing list (details below) so you can participate in discussions.
Remember that the more you put in, the more you will get out
of it. Having access to the Internet is highly recommended so you
can access the web site and email. You may just want to join the
mailing list and get a feel for what is happening or at the other
extreme you may want to come to or even organise a meeting and/or
work on an exciting project. There is a lot we can achieve,
especially if we work together, and it should be fun too!
Maroondah BUG Mailing List
This is an electronic mailing list. In other words anyone on the list can easily send an email message to everyone else on the list. This is a great way to raise a question and others can respond if they wish and at their convenience. When you receive a message you want to respond to, you can reply back to the list so everyone will receive your input or you may choose to reply privately by just sending to the sender's email address. Since you are interested in local cycling issues, hopefully some of the messages you receive will interest you!
Be aware that this is a public group so any messages posted are viewable by anyone, not just those people on the list. If you'd like to see past messages (from before you joined the list or to help you decide if you'd like to join the list) visit http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/maroondahbug/. Let me know if you experience any problem with it being public.

When contributing a message...
- be considerate of others (bad manners will get you taken off the mailing list)
- if you want to respond it is good courtesy to respond promptly
- short concise messages save everyone time
