St James' Old Cathedral

St James Old Cathedral is located on the corner of King and Batman Streets, West Melbourne (Opposite the Flagstaff gardens). The small Weatherboard church that preceded the present St James was built in 1837. It was on a site near the corner of William and Collins Streets. Its' funding was assisted by other denominations who shared in its use. Work soon commenced on a new building. Designed by Robert Russell, it was in Colonial Georgian style, with blue-stone foundations and main walls of sandstone.

Although incomplete , the new church was opened in 1842. It was completed in 1847. Until the completion of St Paul’s in 1891, St James was the Cathedral Church. The building was dismantled and reconstructed on the present site , reopening in 1914. St James, as Melbourne’s oldest church has great architectural and historical significance to our city. The interior and fittings are of particular interest.
Visitors are most welcome to tour the church or to join the congregation for services.
