The establishment of the Chamber began shortly before the creation of the City of Maribyrnong. Realising the value of a structure which could assist Council consult the business community, the City of Footscray's Economic Development Officer drew together business leaders and an interim committee was formed.
The partnership between Council and the Chamber was further strengthened when the City of Maribyrnong was established. The Commissioners assisted by the Economic Development Officer gave broad support and encouragement to the Chamber culminating in the first Annual General meeting in February 1996.
Thereafter the Executive Committee began a major membership drive, prepared a Strategic Plan, and established specialist industry sector sub-committees. Several successful networking functions were held including training events.
The Chamber developed a strong profile in the business community in line with its mission and objectives. It also worked closely with Council on a proposal for a business rate levy to finance some key business support initiatives in Maribyrnong. Regrettably the proposal was resisted by a small group which gained key positions on the Committee resulting in a critical loss of momentum in major areas of the Chamber's work. That group has now left the Committee.
The current Committee is working hard to restore momentum. This has been done by further recruitment of members, the organising of several networking functions, and participation in Council consultations regarding land use and other matters.
