Dear Editor,

Congratulations to the residents of Mills Street, Aspendale for their initiative in working with Council to plant 50 native trees (Banksias) in Groves Reserve.  It is an opportune time to take an interest in this land between Frankston railway line and Nepean Highway because the Spastic Centre (now Scope) is moving, leaving Groves Reserve under threat.  The Reserve is included in the Mordialloc Structure Plan and is therefore under consideration for a change of status.

It is imperative that Groves Reserve is retained as parkland to compensate for the loss of vegetation and open space due to the medium density over-development occurring throughout the City of Kingston.

The Reserve was named after Frank Groves, who was elected as Carrum’s first mayor in 1920, and later elected to the Legislative Assembly.  He was a strong supporter of education, especially the Caulfield Institute of Technology, which has a Frank Groves Wing.  A hard worker in the local community, he realised the value and necessity of conserving native flora and fauna.  Groves Reserve is a fitting tribute to an important and community minded local identity and must be retained for the enjoyment of future generations.

Yours sincerely,
