Rites of Passage is a play about life, growing up and fitting into society. Society regulates its members’ behaviour through its laws, traditions, expectations, and peer group pressure. Learning to fit in can be like skating on thin ice. What are the acceptable limits, and when does one cross the line and go too far? This play explores our society’s limits in regard to sexuality, responsibility, relationships, violence, food, self image, age, clothing, and communication. The play is made up of about 30 short scenes presented as a game show, "The Game Of Life", complete with ad breaks.

Rites of Passage Poster

Rites of Passage was created through a process called playbuilding. This is a dynamic and interactive process that assembles a dramatic performance through improvisation, discussion and rehearsal. The improvisations are analysed, reshaped and refined through a series of workshops and rehearsals. Anyone interested in the playbuilding technique should read Errol Bray's book "Playbuilding, a guide for group creation of plays with young people" (Currency Press, Sydney, 1991).
