Directed by Bryce Presented March 5th March 8th at Grainery Lane Theatre as part of the 2003 Ballarat Begonia Festival.
"What impressed most was the collaborative nature of this ensemble, their genuine appreciation and generous support of each other and their commitment and passion to the work of creating theatre. I saw a bit of the lunatic, the lover and the poet in each of them. Congratulations to the director, the actors, the technical team, the crew and all that helped put this Dream together." -
A Midsummer Nights Dream Review by Andrew Seeary. Six fantastic performances playing to standing room only houses during Ballarats Begonia Festival meant MAYTE enjoyed an astounding success with our production of A Midsummer Nights Dream. A long time dream of director Bryce Ives - the production enjoyed both critical and commercial success in what must be classed as Shakespeares best comedy in a raucous and incredibly funny new interpretation. In his review in the Ballarat Courier Saturday the 8th of March - Andrew Seeary described the production as a resounding success for the company. Midsummer Night's Dream'' is a perfect vehicle for this large cast and crew. Often described as Shakespeare's frothiest and most accessible play, this funny romantic comedy contains some good laughs. The director Bryce Ives knows this and plays it for the light fun that it is. From balloon swords, bicycle riding faeries, garden gnomes, techno music, umbrellas, funky dance, flairs, clothes lines, a loud rock band and even Japanese kimonos, this production had an eclectic mixture of styles and ideas mixed together. The cast and crew were all under the age of twenty-two, with out youngest cast member being just ten years of age! However audience members would never have known! The review noted The cast's energies have been well harnessed with some very impressive performances throughout. After an intense (and tiring) four month rehearsal period, the standard of performance was nothing short of spectacular! Dropping the nasty Shakespeare stigma and ensuring the audience enjoyed the text was the first hurdle in a process which was nothing short of amazing for all involved. Perhaps the most exciting thing for MAYTE was A Midsummer Nights Dream really did take Ballarat by storm! Every night was a sell-out. We had to turn audience members away and every possible vantage point in the theatre was full. We had over one hundred people audition for the show and we even had to turn away good people from crewing the show. The challenge of A Midsummer Nights Dream really did pay off. What a success! Bryce - Director.
