Herrnhut is located in Day's Lane, between Penshurst and Hamilton. The lane is gravel with the Cemetery about 2.5 kms from the
Highway. There is only one surviving headstone, unreadable and the Church has long since been demolished. The Cemetery was
in operation from 1862 until 1890. The Church was dedicated in 1854 and demolished around 1906. A board at the Cemetery
entrance lists known burials at the site. A lot of work has been done to clear and restore the area. Betty Huf is a local historian specialising in the German & Wendish settlers of the Western District and I am indebted to her, not only for assistance and information, but for her efforts in researching this early settlement. She, along with co-author William Metcalf, have published a book about Herrnhut and its history - "Herrnhut: Australia's First Utopian Community". It is available through Melbourne University Press (ISBN 0-522-84993-8) Read other extensive notes about Herrnhut in the Penshurst archives or the West Vic Historical Soc page |
