Report of Public Meeting held 14th Sept 2008 at Moorabbin Golf Club

Sixty three people attended a public meeting called by Moorabbin Airport Residents Association [ MARA] , the Dingley village community Association [ DVCA] and the Save the Golf Course Group[ STGCG] to discuss airport safety and associated concerns related to the adverse impact of airport activities on surrounding suburbs and residents.

Apologies were received from Hon Simon Crean, Hon Mark Dreyfus, Hon Jannice Munt & Mr. B Curtis.

The Chairman acknowledged the attendance of Cr R.West [Kingston], Cr P. Brown [Greater Dandenong], Mr. T Uren       [Pres. MARA] Mr. J. Cook [representing Hon. Simon Crean], Mr. J. Biviano [Pres. DVCA], Inga Peulich MLA, Mr M. Morris  [Independent newspapers]

There were numerous speakers who presented their concerns and suggestions and after a productive debate the following statement was moved by Mr. R. Dix, sec by Mr. M. O’Neil…..

"After a fatal aircraft crash on Wednesday 27th August 2008, and the fact that two planes collided, one of which narrowly missed hitting a nearby classroom, concerned residents, who live, work or study around or near the Moorabbin Airport Precinct, request all levels of Government to work together to provide a safer, quieter airport by……

  • Urgently relocating some basic pilot training to more rural airports.
  • Require any remaining training circuits to avoid residential areas.
  • Cease all development of remaining open space around the airport runways and the golf course, to maintain safety buffers for emergency landings
  • Retain green wedge open space as a further safety buffer and to allow for recreational areas for the Kingston share of the projected four million population growth for Victoria".
  • This motion was supported unanimously with two abstentions.
