Medical Intervention & Treatment

Self (or Sex) Affirmation Procedures are the only effective and recommended treatment for this condition.

Early diagnosis is imperative to reduce the trauma which is experienced when there is a lack of treatment and to enable the best health outcome for the individual.

Effective treatment during adolescence includes treatment with LHRH agonists or with sufficient progestins (which stop the production of estrogens and progesterone) to stop menstruation.

Hormone therapy in the form of intra-muscular injection of testosterone suppresses menstruation and brings male secondary sexual characteristics. Be aware of drug interactions: testosterone increases anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increases clearance of propranol, increases the hypoglycemic effects of sulfonylureas.

Available forms in Australia -
  • Testosterone Cypionate also called Depo-Testosterone (base is cottonseed oil) and
  • Testosterone Enanthate also called Sustanon (base is sesame seed oil). Enanthate or Cypionate

Check for allergy to sesame or cottonseed oil)

Males who experience transsexualism may benefit from the assistance of a competent counsellor in dealing with the trauma associated with the condition (PTSD).
