Towards a draft Ethics Statement

The right of any patient to self autonomy and effective health care is a fundamental tenement of Australia's medical system and the relevant Health Service providers.

In order to provide effective health care to individuals who experience transsexualism, health care providers are encouraged to adopt the following Ethics Statement and procedures, so they may provide effective health services to their patients in a human and dignified manner that respects patient autonomy.

1) respect for the inherent dignity and identity of the patient.

2) the individuals right to participate in health decisions relevant to their health and well-being.

3) establishing informed consent for SAP* (to be fleshed out yet).

4) a commitment to ongoing training and awareness of developments in the treatment of transsexualism.

5) recognition of the physical nature of the condition known as transsexualism.
