Our home is the Malmsbury Mechanics Institute (MMI).

This is located at 71 Mollison Street, Malmsbury, and is generally open on Fridays from 9am to 2.30pm for the public to conduct in-person research. Fees apply (see below and our "Service List" page).

THE SOCIETY WILL NOT BE OPEN ON DAYS OF TOTAL FIRE BAN IN THE CENTRAL AND/OR NORTH CENTRAL FIRE DISTRICTS.

Please make an appointment. We have limited volunteers who can donate their time. If we know you are coming we can do our best to help you find what you seek.

Other times are available by prior appointment. Check with the Secretary before planning a visit to ensure volunteers will be available to assist you.

 

PLEASE NOTE: We are not a tourist information centre that can hand out free brochures and information. We will assist travellers where we can.

 

FEES.

 

Our Society is a not-for-profit organization and all of our work is done by volunteers. Nobody is earning an income from the work we do. While this means we are able to keep the fees at a minimum (professional historians can charge upwards of $75 per hour) we have ongoing expenses for rent, stationery, computer equipment etc. For this reason there are fees for time spent on research, copying, postage etc. While we will always endeavour to find information to answer all your questions, the research fee is payable whether we do so or not. If we can't help we will try and find someone who can, and we may be able to put you in contact with people who are researching the same subject or family.

 

Members of Malmsbury Historical Society are entitled to undertake in-person research at the Society free of any research fees. Fees associated with photocopying, printing, digital photographs, are still applicable. We do request you let us know when you will be visiting and what you are looking for to so we can help you make the most of your time.

 

"In-person research" means visiting the Society rooms where you will be provided with a working area. Our research volunteers will assist you with your questions and bring relevant records to you based on your needs. To ensure all items are returned to the correct place, the collection is not open for general browsing.

Our origins stem from the Malmsbury Historical Group, created to organize the 1987 celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the settlement of the district by squatter Alexander Mollison. After the event, the group continued on and eventually became incorporated as Malmsbury Historical Society in 1990.
