English-Macedonian Dictionary

Olga Miseska Tomic ed, English-Macedonian Dictionary, Skopje: Kultura, 1994, 800 pp.

In May 1994, the oldest Macedonian publishing house Kultura, published the first standard English-Macedonian Dictionary.

The Dictionary has been prepared by a team of five English language specialists, whose mother tongue is Macedonian: Olga Miseska Tomic, Mirka Misic, Ljupco Stefanovski, Natka Gogova and Zoze Murgoski. The structure of the Dictionary was designed by Olga Miseska Tomic, who also supervised the work and edited the Dictionary.

The Dictionary includes cca. 50 000 words. The main emphasis has been oncurrently used words and expressions, though literary and archaic items,so important in reading, have not been neglected. The pronunciation of all the words is phonologically transcribed; the transcription following, in substance as well as in form, the transcription in Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (1973/1983).

The irregular forms of each item are explicitly stated; specific phrases and collocations are also listed. For each entry a wealth of translation equivalents, ordered according to frequency, are given. While employing the findings of modern lingvistics to give an adequate description of the basic building blocks of English and their equivalents in Macedonian, the authors have tried to anticipate the essential needs of the dictionary user and devise the best ways of satisfying them.

The Dictionary is intended primarily for translators and (intermediate and advanced) students of English and Macedonian. However, its design makes it suitable for use by anyone who requires information on the lexical correspondence between English and Macedonian.

The retail price of the Dictionary is the equivalent of 60 Australian dollars plus 25 dollars shipping costs. There is a 30 per cent discount if more than 10 copies are purchased, in which case the Australian buyer would have it for 60 Australian dollars. Please place your order to mfmedia@vicnet.net.au
