Tyers - 6 March 2002 With rider numbers down, a scratch race consisting of an A and B grade was conducted. This gave some newer riders the chance to ride with some of the more experienced club members and get the feel for racing tactics.
A grade started with 8 riders and finished in a bunch sprint. Tony Hiriat who had been riding in C grade for most of the summer was the main aggressor and made the field work to bring him back. Veteran club sprinter, Wayne Collins was quietly sitting in the group waiting for the right time to unleash his powerful sprint as the group headed towards the line. Bill Pace found himself at the front too early and was forced to lead the sprint out. Wayne Collins opened the sprint up and had Darren Spiteri on his wheel, Wayne proving too powerful at the finish taking a good win with Phil Bechaz taking third.
B grade started with 7 riders who all worked well until the hilly part of the circuit around past the APM where Greg Williams and Vic Spunner started applying immense pressure and continued to keep the pace high over all of the hills. The pace caused the group to splinter leaving four riders to ride to the finish and contest the sprint finish. Each rider playing their own game as the pace slowed towards the finish. With 400m left to race, the sprint started with Vic Spunner the first to move, Daryl Griggs showed some good speed and sliced his way through the filed to take a narrow victory from Vic Spunner, Greg Williams and Bill Caddy
Encouragement was giving to all riders at the completion of the race especially to those who made the step up to A grade and their consistent effort and their willingness to have a go is paying off with many riders showing significant improvement in their riding ability.
