Newborough Criterium - 9 January 2002
Race 5 - Summer Criterium SeriesLatrobe Valley Cycling Club returned to racing after a break during the > Christmas period. Numbers were down but the racing was still very exciting.
In the junior field, Colin Draper once again showed some good form. Riding from a 1min 20 sec handicap, Draper was able to catch the front markers to take a solid win, taking second was the ever present Kerry Buckley followed by Jillian Buckley.
C grade once again finished in a bunch sprint. The race was full of attacks but the field was vigilant. Young rider Brad Wearne and Luke Prust were lurking around the front of the field as the race was giving three laps to go. Luke set the pace for the last lap and a half but was unable to hold the bunch off in the sprint to the line. Bruce Evanson once again burst from the pack to take a good win ahead of Luke Prust, Bill Caddy and Brad Wearne.
With numbers down, A and B grade were combined. The race started fast as Paul Wilson set a high tempo. Darren Spiteri attacked but was chased down, Paul Wilson and Rob Reid both attacked the field with no success, at the 25 minute mark of the 30 min race, Reid attacked and went away and continued on for a solo victory. Darren Spiteri won the bunch sprint from Wayne Collins.
