Newborough Criterium -5 December 2001
Race 2 - Summer Criterium SeriesLV cycling held the second race of an eight race series on Wednesday night. With riders competing for points over the next six weeks the racing is quickly becoming very competitive and exciting.
It was good to see a few more of our younger riders back in action and we hope we see even more over the next few weeks. The junior race is run over 2 laps and all riders are handicapped so anyone can come and have a go. This week Colin Draper was the stand out, winning convincingly and riding off 40 sec. Emma Beveridge was a fast finishing second and she also rode very well in C Grade, which was a great effort. Lachlan Hiriart was 3rd and Kerry Buckley a well ridden 4th.
C grade raced in a tight bunch for most of the race and it was anyone's race with 3 laps to go. Then the attacks came, firstly from Bill Caddy and then Daryl Griggs and Tony Hiriart. But Peter (Zorba) Tsebelis, with a powerful display over the last 50 metres, took the points. With two wins under his belt it looks as if Peter is the one to beat. In an exciting race for second Tony Hiriart got across the line closely followed by Bill Caddy and Daryl Griggs with Brad Wearne 5th .
Without topguns Darren Spiteri and Glen Trevorrow, B Grade looked like a wide open affair. With the early pace being set by Ian Draper, Steve Rieniets and Alan Beveridge, the race looked like it was going to be a real test of stamina. But with no one else too interested in sitting up the front, things settled down until the 23rd minute when Steve Rieniets attacked hard . Then with a lap to go Ian Draper got a break but a tough head wind slowed him and he was caught by the pack. Vic Spunner, who had been hovering around the front, was looking comfortable. But it was the sprinters who eventually took the points, Bill Pace winning with Mike Pitrun 2nd Steve Rieniets 3rd . Ian Draper who did a lot of the work up front was 4th followed by Kevin Piercy.
A Grade without Rob Reid looked very even and again it was anyone's race . So picking an early winner was tough . The riders were setting a furious pace early but were all sharing the work into the wind. It was looking like we would see an exciting sprint finish and we were not disappointed. In a hectic run at the line anyone of 5 riders could have got the points . Peter Verhagen eventually won by less than a bike length from Glen Gibson and Wayne Collins. Gray McLoughlin was 4th and Chris Kypo 5th.
A big thanks should go to Wayne Tunks who is kept very busy each week collecting entries, timekeeping and looking after the racing.
