Tyers - 14 November 2001

On a pleasant evening, 25 riders lined up at Tyers for the 3rd race of the Latrobe Valley Cycling Clubs summer series. With a good number of new riders joining in, the club is enjoying some good racing. The 25 riders were divided into four different groups for a handicap race with the fastest riders (scratch) having to make up a 5 minute gap over the 26km.

The front groups were riding well and despite the pace being kept high, a number of the new riders were able to hang in. The scratch bunch started catching other groups along the back of Maryvale Mill. On the way into Traralgon, the scratch bunch were starting to look like threatening the front riders and when the limit riders turned onto the Traralgon-Tyers road, the scratch bunch had them in sight. Once on the flat ground on the run in to Tyers, it was Gray McLachlan once again driving the group. With all of the riders now caught, it was time to play cat and mouse to see who would win the bike race. Into Archbold's Lane there was a group of some 8-9 riders looking to steal victory. New rider, Paul Wilson was keeping a good tempo until Gray McLachlan decided it was time to make a move for the win. His move was a long way from the line. As riders jostled for the right position, Gray continued to power to the line for a good win. In the pack, Paul Mead made a furious dash for the line and just managed to get ahead of Glen Gibson.

It's not often that the scratch bunch manages to take the win. They certainly worked hard for it.

  1. 1st - Gray McLachlan

  3. 3rd - Glen Gibson

Fastest Time - Gray McLachlan
