Brad Wearne - 2001 Dargo to Grant Champion

On 31 March the Latrobe Valley Cycling Club held a ride from Traralgon to Dargo, a distance of 180 km with 15 riders participating. Fuelled by Manny's Market fruit and Traralgon Hot Bread hot cross buns, the ride was interspersed with some competitive components. These being a Sprint into Briagalong, King of the Mountain, Fastest Speed and a Sprint into Dargo. Joel Pearson of Warragul swept the pool, winning all four events. Fastest speed was 94 km/hr.

Riders, families and friends spent the night at the Dargo Mill Tavern in preparation for the running of the first "Dargo Mill Tavern" - Dargo to Grant Hill Climb the next day.

9 riders lined up to tackle the 18.2 km's up Australia's most challenging road hill climb. The race was run as a handicap event with the youngest participant, 15 year old Brad Wearne showing much youthfull enthusiasm to win the event. Fastest Time was Trevor Schessl demonstrating awesome strength to finish in 53 min 15 sec at an average speed of 20.5 km/hr. All 9 riders completed the ride, which was a great achievement.
