Galilean Nights Friday 23rd October 2009 7:30 pm Band Room, Morwell Town Common (Corner of Chapel and Elgin Streets, Morwell) How to get there: Google Map |
This year celebrates the 400th anniversary of the use of the telescope in astronomy.
The first two objects known to have attracted telescopic observation were the Moon and Jupiter, and as part of the celebrations, The Latrobe Valley Astronomical Society is presenting a viewing night to observe these same two objectsusing a number of the society's and members' telescopes. Members of the public are also invited to bring their own. (If you are not entirely sure of setting yours up, we will be happy to help - if we have time.)
The event will still go ahead even if the weather is overcast, in which case there will be display of some of the instruments, and LVAS members will be on hand to have a yarn about what we get up to.
Admission is free, (though we will always accept a donation) and a "Cuppa" will be available at the end of the evening
The evening is on Friday the 23rd October, from 7:30 pm, at the Band Hall, Morwell Town Common, corner of Chapel and Elgin Streets. (7:30 ? No, not a missprint. And no, it won't be particularly dark by then. However, The Moon and Jupiter are both pretty bright, so we don't need full darkness to start observing them, and it will also give you a chance to have a look at the telescopes themselves before it gets too dark to see them.)
This event is part of the Galilean Nights international observing event.
