So you are thinking of buying (someone) a telescope for Christmas ?

The Latrobe Valley Astronomical Society will present an information night on the basic principles of choosing a telescope, covering:

• Choosing a "modest" telescope:
  Up to $600 or so (with digressions a bit higher)
  For a "non-expert" astronomer
  For visual (rather than photographic) observing
• How much does size matter ?
• How much magnification do I need ?
• what do all the numbers mean anyway ?
• What can I look at (with a particular 'scope) ?
• What sort of mounting is best (for me)?

So if you are thinking of buying a telescope, having an understanding of a few of the basic principles makes choosing the right telescope for you much easier. Even if you already have a telescope, but are only just starting to come to terms with it, undersanding the basic principles will help you work out its capabilities, so you can make the most of using it.
