This year marks the 400th anniversary of the invention of telescopes - or, more exactly, the 400th year of their recorded use in astronomy.

As part of the celebrations, The Latrobe Valley Astronomical Society is presenting a public talk "1609 - 2009: 400 years of telescopes". This presentation covers the development of the telescope, with examples of some of the more interesting and outstanding ones. It will cover historical telescopes through to space telescopes and the design of a modern, very large telescope. As well, we will briefly discuss the kinds of telescopes now available for hobby use, and there will be display of some of the society's and members' instruments, with the chance to look through them, weather permitting. Admission is free, (though we will always accept a donation). A "Cuppa" will be available at the end of the evening

The evening is on Thursday the 23rd July, from 7:30 pm, at the Band Hall, Morwell Town Common, corner of Chapel and Elgin Streets.
