BRIGADE TRAINING
The brigade trains twice a month on Wednesday
nights and occasionally will have extra training exercises on Sunday mornings.
In general, training exercises are set up to be as realistic as possible
so that skills learnt during an exercise can be readily used when responding
to an incident. A typical training night may involve revising fire
ground practices or being introduced to new firefighting techniques and
equipment. Training may include:
-
basic firefighting skills (ie. hydrant use, wildfire behavior, etc.)
-
using pumps in various situations (draughting from a dam/river, boosting,
quickfill)
-
search and rescue with CABA (Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus)
-
methods for combating hazardous chemical incidents and gas leaks
-
map reading and basic navigation
-
bushfire survival skills
-
motor vehicle accident (MVA) appreciation
-
familiarisation with both structural and natural fire risks in the Launching
Place and Don Valley areas
Training is also conducted at the Killara Group level,
with a number of brigades in the group taking part in exercises either
within the group or at one of the CFA's fire training grounds around the
state. Within the group, training may involve strike team exercises
or specialisation exercises such as those involving HAZCHEM of breathing
apparatus for example. These training sessions are often quite complex
and allow brigades in the group to work with each other.
The group or brigade may also utilise CFA training
grounds such as South Eastern Training Ground (SETG) or Fiskville which
is CFA's largest training ground, and offers numerous courses. Many
different scenarios are presented at each training ground, and are highly
valuable for developing firefighting skills among crews which are sent
to train at these venues.
