Competition
Running
Competition running involves brigade members competing
in events that are designed to replicate actual firefighting practices
used on the fire ground. This competition is highly competitive with
teams from different brigades racing against each other in an attempt to
get the best time. Events are run using a trailer that is setup with
a pump, water tank, hydrant locker, hoses and nozzels. All trailers
are built to standards set down by the
Victorian
Rural Fire Brigades Association, and therefore teams must work with
accuracy and speed to win an event.
The basic structure of events involves starting pumps, running out
hose lengths, connecting couplings and hitting a target with a jet of water,
or breaking a tape.
The competition running season starts in February
with individual championships taking place in each CFA region. The season
ends with the state championships in which competitors from all over Victoria
gather to compete (pictured are the 1996 state championships in Bendigo).
Each year the state championships are held at a different regional centre
such as Swan Hill and Ballarat for example. Launching Place Fire
Brigade has entered teams in competition running for a number of years
now, and over the past few years have managed to win a few medals and trophies.
New brigade members are encouraged to become involved in competition running
as it helps develop firefighting skills and team work among brigade members.
