LPFB Resources

This section contains resources that may act as a starting point for web-based research for further material about firefighting, wildfires and weather.  These links can provide useful information and tools for those living within the Launching Place/Don Valley fire district and further afield.

THE COUNTRY FIRE AUTHORITY

For the latest information about fire safety and fire prevention, visit the official Country Fire Authority web site.  Here you will be able to find answers to questions such as:

what should you do when threatened by a bushfire,
how should you prepare for a bushfire,
what does it mean when a day of Total Fire Ban is declared,
what can and cannot be done during the Fire Restriction Period,
how can you improve fire safety in the home,
where can you find more information about CFA as an organisation.

THE SHIRE OF YARRA RANGES

Information about the most recent municipal fire management plan can be found at the Shire of Yarra Ranges web site.  The fire management plan is of most interest to those wanting more information about the shire's fire management strategies and rules and regulations effecting burning off and the management of vegetation on private land.

CSIRO BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR AND MANAGEMENT GROUP

The CSIRO Bushfire Behaviour and Management Group website provides an introduction to some of the research being conducted into the modelling of wildfire behaviour in both grassland and forest environments.  It is possible to download a 'Fire Calculator' at this website which can be used to calculate local fire danger ratings.

BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY

Weather is a major influence on the behaviour of wildfires.  At the Bureau of Meteorology Victorian Weather and Warnings website fire weather forecasts and current observations across the state can be accessed.  Rainfall can also be tracked by the images provided by Victorian weather radars.

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED BEING A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER?

Taking part in your local brigade as a volunteer firefighter is an incredibly rewarding experience, and gives people the opportunity to take part in a dedicated team while helping the local community.  To find out more about getting involved in volunteer firefighting, visit the CFA Volunteers - Ordinary People Extraordinary Job website.
