Brumby Launches Loddon Murray Training Needs Study
The Minister for State and Regional Development, John Brumby, today released the findings of a major study that will improve access to training for farmers in the Loddon Murray region. Mr Brumby was in Kerang at the invitation of Loddon Murray 2000 plus, the group that initiated the study. The report entitled "Identification of Special Training Needs" is part of the Loddon Murray 2000 plus project to facilitate change in the region by improving skill levels in the region and matching providers of training with the needs of farmers across all agricultural industries. Mr Brumby said, "the report clearly shows that there is no single formula for providing skills training in rural Victoria." Training includes the areas of production, management, general business and personal development. "The report highlights some very important differences in training requirements across agricultural industries. Providers of training must heed the results of the study and better match the provision of training with farmers' needs," Mr Brumby said. "For example, the timing of training courses is a very practical consideration. Dairy farmers indicate that they prefer training between 10 am and 2 pm, so that training does not interfere with milking. However, horticultural farmers prefer the evening, between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., he said. Key recommendations from the report include: improved consultation with skills training providers; establishing a 'skills training' review committee; and recognising a range of different applications for training assistance by individual farmers, a group of farmers or by the training provider on behalf of the individual or group. "There is clearly a need for training provider guidelines and better communication to provide farmers with details on skills training activities throughout the region. Loddon Murray 2000 plus obviously has a role as a contact point for farmers seeking training skills and then matching these farmers with preferred providers," Mr Brumby said. The report identifies the barriers preventing the take-up of skills training and presents a number of strategies to ensure a high take-up rate of training activities undertaken in the region. A training provider database, included with the report, identifies 43 private agricultural and agribusiness consultants, 11 registered training organisations and nine tertiary training providers who can help improve farmer's skills in the Loddon Murray region. Copies of the report can be obtained via the Web Site. |
