One of the initiatives of Loddon Murray 2000 Plus is the identification of infrastructure required to support regional development.
A study by Sinclair Knight Merz was commissioned to identify:  Likely prime development zones in the Loddon Murray region.
Infrastructure required to service these likely prime development zones.
key findings The study established that the Loddon Murray region has the resources to support significant new investment in viticulture and horticulture. Fifteen likely prime development zones were identified.
The Loddon Murray region has the existing channel capacity to support the development of over 13,000 ha within these likely prime development zones.
Over 31,000 ha of these likely prime development zones could be developed if water right was transferred upstream and\or channel capacity was increased.
next steps The Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) are planning to undertake Land Capability Assessments of the likely prime development zones. The assessments will include: Landform and soil survey
Surface and sub-surface drainage assessment
Drainage water disposal assessment
Hydrogeological impact assessment
Impact on biodiversity within wetland and terrestrial ecosystems
guidelines for irrigation development Approved policy and guidelines for irrigation development must be followed for all irrigation developments in the Loddon Murray region. |
