"The Flow" sculpture |
|
"The Flow" is a large sculpture representing all aspects of the region - community members of all ages; all types of historic and contemporary farming practice; the wildlife; and the central linking element between all the communities - water, in the form of irrigation channels.
The sculpture, opposite the Mobil Service Station at the intersection of the Loddon Valley Highway and Calivil/Mitiamo Road, Serpentine, comprises concrete, metal and 536 ceramic tiles handmade and decorated by community members. "The Flow" was designed by Gretchen Hillhouse in collaboration with the communities of Calivil, Mitiamo, Dingee, Serpentine, Inglewood and Bridgewater on Loddon. Over a period of five months, Gretchen has been working with members of the Southern Loddon Murray region communities and with children at East Loddon P-12 College, Inglewood Primary School, Bridgewater Primary School and St. Mary's Primary School. Gretchen Hillhouse "It has been very exciting to work on a project of this scale and facilitate the expression of the ideas of so many people. It is inspiring to see just what can be achieved when a lot of people of different skills work together for a common goal." "I've especially enjoyed working with the children, some of whom have not had the opportunity to work with clay before, who have produced some fantastically creative work. I think everyone who has been involved with this sculpture can feel a sense of pride and be reminded of their community's achievement each time they look at it". "The Flow" was opened on Thursday 28 October, 1999. An initiative of Loddon Murray 2000 plus sponsored by supported by the opening |
