ProjectsMembers of Lions Clubs actively support many local and international community projects. The following projects are some of the activities currently supported by the Lions Club of Werribee. Lions Charity Golf Day The 2007 Lions Charity Golf Day was held on 08 October 2007. The Club runs an annual Golf Day at the Werribee Park Golf Club to raise funds for various charities. Over the past seven years the main recipients of our proceeds have been the Cord Blood Institute ($22,500), Camp Quality ($23,500), Australian Lions Children's Mobility Foundation ($16,000) and Mercy Western Palliative Care ($10,000). The Lions Club of Werribee dedicated the proceeds ($11,500) from the 2007 event to Wyndham Lodge Community Aged Care Building Appeal. The 2007 Golf Day was a roaring success. It is through the generous support of our sponsors that the Lions Club is able to help those in the community less fortunate than ourselves. The 2007 winners were: Sponsors Trophy Winner - Star News Group

Relay For Life 2008 at Wyndham - A Team Event to Fight Cancer Relay for Life is a fun, outdoor and overnight 24 hour fundraising event where teams of 10 to 20 plus people take turns to walk around a local oval. The event honours those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Celebrate life and create hope by joining your friends, family, cancer survivors and their carers in the common goal of defeating cancer. The Lions Club of Werribee entered a team in the Wyndham 2008 event and have vowed to be back again next year to help raise funds for this most worthy event. The Club would appreciate any donations towards their next year's fundraising program. Enquiries and donations are welcomed and can be emailed to the Club. The 24 hour walkathron was held at the Athletic Track, Victoria University, Hoppers Lane, Werribee on the weekend of 5 & 6 April and consisted of 25 teams from the local area. The combined effort of all teams raised more than $80,000 towards cancer research, education and support programs, of which the Werribee Lions Club contributed $4,450. The Werribee Lions Team comprised 55 walkers over the 24 hour event with many more family and friends joining in to make it an unforgettable experience. One of the highlights was the Candlelight Ceremony at night where candles were lit and positioned around the walking track in memory of those lost to cancer and to show support for those living with cancer.
Lions Village Licola is a Lions owned village located in the mountains east of Melbourne. This village comprises of numerous houses, gymnasium, church, dining area, hospital and extensive grounds. All Lions Clubs are entitled to send groups of children or elderly citizens to organised camps throughout the year. Our Club is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep on one of the houses (No 6 Magpie). We have had several working bees at the site and have repainted, retiled, refurbished the kitchen and bathroom, installed a decking and enclosed the rear area. Not only have these working bees provided much needed maintenance to the house but has provided the Club with a means of both friendship and fellowship within the Club. This project will definitely be an ongoing one and we encourage all Lions Clubs to send children and/or elderly citizens to the camp.

On 6 November 2004 'The Lions House Foundation' started pushing a humidicrib from Albury to Geelong then onto Melbourne. The event was raising funds to provide affordable accommodation for families from rural areas who have loved ones receiving treatment at the Mercy Hospital for Women and Austin Health in Melbourne. Starting early in the morning of 25 November, members of the Lions Club of Werribee (Bob, Eric, Graham and Carol) and the Mayor of Wyndham (Henry Barlow) joined members of 'The Lions House Foundation' in pushing the humidicrib through Wyndham from the Mercy Hospital, through Hoppers Crossing, the Plaza and onto the Civic Centre for afternoon tea. The journey continued down Watton St to finish at Chirnside Park late in the afternoon. Lots of donations were collected throughout the day especially by Carol at the Cultural Centre and Graham from the Hotels.
The Lions Club of Werribee Inc. has a long association with Wyndham Lodge dating back to 1982 when it sponsored the original appeal for the 20-bed home. It is named Lions Wyndham Lodge. Wyndham Lodge is a local Age Care Hostel which was built by fundraising in the local community. The Lions Club of Werribee Inc was a major instigator in the fundraising venture and consequently has one of the main rooms named after one of its Past Presidents, Lion Maurice Rushford. Over the past years the Club has taken on the responsibility of the maintenance of the lawns and gardens and has employed the services of handicapped people from the Mambourin Centre to tend the gardens. The club is now involved in the next development to increase the capacity to 30 beds and has taken the lead in fundraising through an innovative project. Through the support of a member Lion Frank Lobianco (DJA Homes) the Club constructed a 26 square home (including double garage) on the Riverview Estate at Hoppers Crossing. The proceeds from the sale of the house were donated to Wyndham Lodge as a contribution to their building extension appeal. The culmination of this project was only possible through the unselfish support not only of DJA Homes but the many local sponsors. The Club is also involved in various community welfare projects to help the needy within the municipality. Theses tasks include lawn mowing, yard maintenance, provision of needed household items and provision of medical equipment.
Werrama is a local festival within Wyndham and held every year in March. Previously the Club has been involved in entering a float for the procession, conducting sausage sizzles, providing the Lions Sight van, conducting hearing tests and more recently controlling the procession. This year the Club became more involved in the organisational side of the festival's major procession; but that's what Lions is all about - Community Involvement.
Over the past years the Club has, in conjunction with the local Council, been involved with the beautification of the Werribee River in Wyndham Park. So far we have constructed a waterfall and dam which allows street water to flow into the river. This area has also been replanted with trees and grasses. A Bar-b-que has been built and recently a play ground has been constructed near the Bar-b-que. Although this project is very time consuming it has highlighted our Clubs activities within the City of Wyndham.
