FROM JUDE WALLACE AND FELICITY HAMPEL QC

ABOUT PRESIDENTIAL CHANGES

On 17 August 1998, the presidency of Liberty Victoria will change. As you know, Libertys major role is advocacy for civil liberties and human rights. Libertys success has been built on the dedication of its Presidents and office bearers who contribute their time and effort voluntarily.

Jude Wallace has been Vice President of Liberty for many years and President for the previous two.

In her personal capacity, Jude has taken up opportunities to participate in public life, first as a member of the Real Republic ticket for the Constitutional Convention and now as ALP Candidate for the federal seat of Higgins, held by the Treasurer Peter Costello.

With the election looming, Jude will turn her Presidency over to the Vice President, Felicity Hampel QC. As Past President Jude will continue her support of Liberty and its goals.

Acting President, Felicity Hampel QC said "Judes record as a dedicated advocate of human rights and civil liberties is acknowledged by Liberty. We wish her well in the political mainstream. A strong public role for defenders of human rights and civil liberties is sorely needed to keep the right balance in Australian democracy."

"Liberty looks forward to continued involvement in public debates about all significant issues affecting the relationship of government to its citizens and will continue to be a staunch critic of all governments which fail protect the human rights of their citizens."
