| Felicity Hampel has become the acting President of
Liberty Victoria. The press release is available here. A Publications and Communications sub-committee has started forming. Currently it is Anne O'Rourke, Daniel Marks, Greg Connellan and Peter Bancroft. We will be trying to bring you a range of online, electronic and printed services. We expect this site to grow gradually. It is currently 38 pages in size. We expect it to have more than 100 pages by the end of the year. |
| Editorial | The views expressed are the personal opinion of the editor, Peter Bancroft, and are not necessarily the policy of Liberty Victoria. This column aims to be provocative. |
| On 12:15am on Sunday August 16th 1998, two Police
Officers were shot dead in Moorabbin, Victoria. Details of the incident are sketchy. However one thing is completely clear, these men were killed by the use of firearms. Firearms that should not have been available to be used in this way. Some time ago, Liberty stood side by side with the Police Association in lobbying to get rid of guns in the community. After Port Arthur, the Howard Government did good work in reducing the number of firearms. I don't think they went far enough. It is time that we introduced a complete ban on the ownership of firearms. Most arguments pro guns are unsupportable. Alternatives are available for farmers. Duck shooting looks likely to be banned on environmental grounds. The only time I can imagine a firearm being needed is where people are in the bush and in an area where they are likely to be ripped to shreds by a wild pig. Domestically and in most parts of the country, there are no valid arguments for ownership, especially ownership of shotguns. Have you ever seen anyone who has survived an attempted suicide with a shotgun blast to the head? It's not a pretty sight, even two years after the event. This really gets down to basics, the fundamental things that make up our community. We need to design safer communities. Communities that are intrinsically safe. How do we do it? My deepest personal sympathies go out to the families of the two officers. |
