Melomakaroya (Sweet Biscuits)

This is a traditional Greek dish, served on Christmas and other special occasions. Vicki's mother uses orange juice instead of beer in the recipe. These biscuits are especially delicious in cold weather.

Ingredients

Method

Dough:

1 cup butter

3 cups olive oil

3 cups beer

2 cups sugar

1 tablespoon grated cinnamon and clove

grated rind from 1-2 oranges, depending on size of orange

2 kilos self-raising flour

Syrup:

3 cups sugar

3 cups honey

2 cups water

grated walnuts

In a large bowl, mix the six first ingredients very well.

Add the flour little by little.

Shape the dough into biscuits.

Cook in a medium oven for about 30 minutes.

Remove from oven and allow to cool.

Mix the syrup ingredients in a saucepan, bring to a boil, and simmer for 3 minutes.

Pour the hot syrup on the biscuits and sprinkle with grated walnuts.
