Melomakaroya (Sweet Biscuits) |

This is a traditional Greek dish, served on Christmas and other special occasions. Vicki's mother uses orange juice instead of beer in the recipe. These biscuits are especially delicious in cold weather.

Dough: 1 cup butter 3 cups olive oil 3 cups beer 2 cups sugar 1 tablespoon grated cinnamon and clove grated rind from 1-2 oranges, depending on size of orange 2 kilos self-raising flour Syrup: 3 cups sugar 3 cups honey 2 cups water grated walnuts |
In a large bowl, mix the six first ingredients very well. Add the flour little by little. Shape the dough into biscuits. Cook in a medium oven for about 30 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Mix the syrup ingredients in a saucepan, bring to a boil, and simmer for 3 minutes. Pour the hot syrup on the biscuits and sprinkle with grated walnuts. |
