LOCKINGTON
& DISTRICT LIVING HERITAGE COMPLEX
Website: Heritage Complex Web Site Hello
Everyone! I’ve
been able to find the original article in which the Editor of the Rochester
Express outlined
his thoughts about the proposed railway line from
Elmore to Tomara. It was published in the Rochester Express on “The
long delayed, eagerly looked for, Railway Bill is at last before the public,
and its propositions are being discussed all over the colony, with the result
that very little satisfaction is expressed either by the metropolitan or country
Press. An immense expenditure is proposed on short lines
within the metropolitan area, while several of the new country lines are looked
upon in no friendly spirit by the people for whose benefit it is to be
presumed their construction is proposed. Among the new lines there is
only one which in any degree can be said to affect the interests of residents
in this part of the colony, namely, the proposal to run a line from
Elmore to Tomara, which, we presume, is intended to serve the requirements
of the parishes of Diggorra, Diggorra West, Bamawm, Pannoobamawm,
Milloo, and Pannoomilloo, and in this proposal we find
much room for objection. That a
railway connecting the main Kerang
lines is desirable, and that the agriculturalists of these districts require, and
have a right to obtain, railway facilities, can not for one moment be
gainsaid; but we fail to see on what principle the main line should be
tapped at Elmore in preference to supply
this want. For years business
centre for the residents of the parishes indicated, and a proposal
which would necessarily divert this trade to another centre must be
looked upon with disfavour in this district. And yet the fact is that a line from population
than that of the proposed route and Parliament should pause before
sanctioning a scheme which bears manifest proofs of having been unskilfully
and ignorantly conceived and hurriedly promulgated. As a matter of
fact, residents in the district interested inform us that the Elmore route is
already unpopular, and hope that strong influence will be exerted in order to
have the connection with urged that
the route is chosen because of any engineering necessities
in the alternative road, because between say,
Mitiamo, where the branch could connect with the already constructed line, the
ground is almost as level as a bowling green, and there would not be a
bridge or embankment required throughout its entire length. So much for what
we consider a sin of commission in the measure now before
Parliament. That's all
for this time. There'll be more to come in the next Locky News. ‘Bye until next time, Marg O’Brien. COMMUNITY INFORMATION Australian
Government Mobile Service Units (also known as Drought Buses) are
travelling around with
Australian Government payments and services, including Centrelink and Medicare
enquiries. Specialised
Centrelink staff, including Rural Services Offices, Social Workers
and Customer Service Advisers, travel with the Servicing
Unit. They can
provide farmers, small business owners, families, students and seniors with
information on a broad range of assistance. The unit
will be in Lockington as follows: Tuesday,
27 October, near the Lockington
District Community Centre, Shakespeare
Circuit, Lockington The
unit will be operational from 20 Days to Fire Season
– Prepare, Act, Survive As the weather warms
up, CFA is urging residents to prepare their homes
for the coming fire season. CFA
Acting Manager Community Safety, Alex Caughey says the community
should be taking every opportunity to prepare homes and
properties. “Now
is the time to get prepared,” says Mr Caughey. “A lot of people
will have their Saturday and Sunday afternoons back to themselves
now the football season has ended, so get outside and
do the work.” “It’s
the perfect time to be looking at the odd jobs around homes and
taking action.” “Check
the repairs and maintenance around the house that needs fixing,
because embers from a fire will target those weak spots.” “When
you are evaluating your house, every nook and cranny must
be looked at as a potential threat.” However
while preparing your house is crucial, families must also plan
their gardens, making sure they understand the bushfire risk in
their area. “Where
are the plants and trees, which of them are most likely to ignite
during fires, how close are they to my house – those are the types
of questions people need to be asking themselves,” Mr Caughey
said. CFA
is recommending all residents prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan
and practice the plan regularly. To
assist you in developing a Bushfire Survival Plan, CFA are conducting
free information sessions throughout the North East of contact
the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667. Further

more information, phone the Office of Youth on (03) 9208 3209. The season
commenced Saturday the 3rd of October with A & B Grades
Bunnaloo. A Grade
was at home. Bunnaloo
won the toss and decided to bat. We start
very well with some good tight bowling from Hayden Collins and Jake
Gardiner, we took a four of early wickets which included Mick Buckley the
danger man for Bunnaloo. Before Tom
Edgar & Adam Thompson put on a 76 run partnership. At the end of
Bunnaloo’s 40 over they where 5 for 133 which we happy restricting
Bunnaloo too. The
bowlers all did a really good job with the best being Jake Gardiner 8-0-2-30,
Hayden Collins 7-1-1-34, Greg Pearse 7-0-1-24 Lachlan Collins 8-3-0-17 Josh
Cairns 8-2-1-19, Ben McPhee 2-0-0-8. Our
innings start slowly with myself and Ryan McMinn being dismissed early which
brought Greg Pearse and Hayden Collins to the crease. These to
look good but neither good go on with there innings with Greg out lbw
for 19 and Hayden caught for 20. We struggled for the rest of the day to build
partnerships, we ended up being all out for 116 with good hitting from Steve
Palling, some we have not seen a lot for, which Steve made 22, also Lach
Collins show goods signs for the future with 17 runs and playing some good
shots. We were disappointed with the result in the end these are the game the
club needs the win if we are to play finals. The B
grade Travel to Bunnaloo to play. Bunnaloo
won the toss a elected to bat. The
bowlers bowled well restricting the home side to be all out for 141. With all
bowlers contributing for the day. The
bowling figures where Justin Cantwell 6-2-0-17, Tim Hermans, 5-2-2-7, Geoff
Arnott 5-0-0-22, Shannon Bish 6-0-1-26, Jason Turner 8-0-2-25, Graham Turner
3.3-1-2-21 and Tasman Richards 4-2-2-15 Our
innings never really got start losing wickets at regular intervals. They was
one stand out with Pencil (Jason Turner) making 53 before being caught. The
only other player to get a start was Eric Bish with 23 there was only 2
other players that made it to doubled figures and they where Tim Hermans and
Tasman Richards who both got 11 runs each. Round 2 is
a 2 day game against Echuca South with A grade being a home again. Greg won
the toss and elected to bat on a flat track. Greg told us we had to bat all
day which we set out to do. It was a slow start to our innings
with myself and Paddy Gardiner being very watchful. The south bowlers where
bowling very well with a bit of movement. I was run out for 4 in the 15 over
then followed Tim Hermans lbw the next over. This brought Greg to
the crease which he set about building a good total. At Tea where 4 for 97 in
a reasonable position with Greg still at the crease with Brodie Collins,
Paddy had being dismissed for 32 early. After tea we continued to score runs
at a consistent rate with Brodie being dismissed for 32 before Greg was
caught for 109. Greg had got us into a good position with Pencil making a
good 20 runs and Josh Cairns also making a quick 23 late in the day
which included 2 big 6’s against his old club. We where all out in the
last over of the day for 265, which Greg was happy with the total considering
the out field is very slow. Next Week
we are looking to bowl and field well as we are right in the game. B grade
played Echuca South at south. They won
the toss and elected to bat they were bowled out for 98 with the
top score being Justin Cantwell with 17. In reply
Echuca South are 2 for 50 with Graham Turner taking 1 wicket and the other
being taking by Geoff Arnott. All the bowlers have had a bowl. Hope next week
that the boys can take some early wickets to get south on the back foot. Junior
Cricket for Under 16’s & 14’s has started. We are
sort for both sides so if you are interested, please come along to training
on Thursday nights or speak to Tas Richards @ the Locky takeaway. On Sunday
11th we held our annual Golf day held at the Locky golf course. It was very well support with 14 teams
in a 3 person Ambrose. The day
was won by Nuggets the which consisted of Nugget, Terry & KD, with second
place being 1 stroke off, that team was Chad Jones, Ben Docking & Jess
Cutriss. It was a really great day with the club wishing to thank the golf
club for the use of the course, Nugget who has organized this event as well
as Pencil & Pallo for the food & beverages on the day. Our next

seems to be something that has to be played in between the chatter. Draws will
be given out on the first day of play, but if anybody is unsure and has not been contacted by their
