LOCKINGTON CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL

WOWS THE COMMUNITY

WITH A PROFESSIONAL TYPE SHOW.

Congratulations to the students and staff of the Lockington School, but especially to Jenny Howlett and her team on the superb musical production which was presented to the Community recently.

Every class act was a ‘class act’, and it would have been great to do a Lockington Community News “Album” with photos of each performance, each class, and each child, but space does not permit, everyone did an amazing job.

The costumes left some of the audience speechless.

Very well done.

Photos submitted thank you.

OUR WELLBEING, OUR COMMUNITY

KEYS TO SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES

What can you do within your job, your business or your local community to add

to Campaspe’s well being? Campaspe Primary Care Partnership is hosting a

local conference for local people to look at these very questions on the 9th

October at the Quality Inn Port of Echuca. ‘Our wellbeing, our economy – Campaspe Sustainable Communities Conference’ will bring together leaders across various sectors to talk to one another about how Campaspe can take direct action to build the overall wellbeing of a diverse, robust and vibrant community.

A dynamic program is lined up with guest speakers including; Margot Spalding from Jimmy Possum Furniture, Arron Wood the 2007 Prime Minister's Environmentalist of the Year and Gilbert Rochecouste of Village Well who specialises in 'Place Making'!

Keith Baillie from the Shire of Campaspe said that a “sustainable community is made up of people who care about what matters most”.

Sustainable community living relies on key ingredients such as increased connections between people and a positive physical environment.

“People connecting and feeling part of something bigger than themselves, earning a living, and fitting into the economic life of their community is what we are striving to achieve here in Campaspe” said Emma Brentnall, Executive Officer of Campaspe Primary Care Partnership.

Dean Oberin, Proprietor of Oscar W’s Wharfside award winning restaurant said “this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase local activities and initiatives

and that we all have a role to play in making Campaspe the best it can be”.

Interested community members are encouraged to attend, along with members of local government, local businesses & corporations, community leaders,

industry representative bodies, health sector executives, the not-for-profit and community sector and education leaders.

Under 17’s LBU Grand Final

LBU finished off a great season with a dominating display against Elmore.

The young cats knew it was going to be a struggle and that is what it

turned out to be in the first quarter.

The cats managed only 3 goals to 2 in the opening quarter of the game.

Steve “Small” McIntyre gave the under 17’s a rev up at quarter time, it

worked a treat heading into half time.

The cats kicked away revealing their

dominance with a five goal to one point second quarter to leave the

cats40 points up at half time. The grand final quarter (the third), proved

another dominant quarter for the young cats who booted seven goals

to two to stretch the lead to 71 points at three quarter time. The two goals

in the third quarter from Elmore may have been a lot more if not for the

efforts of Josh Cairns, Luke Bish and Brayden Angove. Jeremy Mundie provided plenty of run off the half back flank.

Brendan Pangrazio finished an impressive season keeping Elmore’s full forward to just one goal. When the game

seemed to be over in the fourth quarter, the Cats didn’t let up. The cats slotted home another 8 goals to one to walk

away from a stellar season as Premiers for the third time in as many years. For LBU the goal kickers were Rhys

Woodland and Ben McPhee, finishing off a strong season in front of goal each bagging 6 goals, Paddy Gardiner putting

on a dominant display bagging 5, Gavin Broad ( named best first year player at Presentation night) kicked 3 goals and

Josh Cairns, Jesse Collins and Hayden Chapel each slotted singles for the day. Best for the cats were Ben McPhee

(was named best on ground for the game, and also the clubs Under 17 Best and Fairest). Next best afield was Brodie

Collins, Paddy Gardiner ( runner up Best and Fairest and winner of the Leagues goal kicking), Greg Carne, Rhys

Woodland and Gavin Broad. Coach Small McIntyre congratulated the boys

on a splendid year and a terrific game, not long after, Small let his emotions

get the better of him revealing how much the Grand final win had meant to

him. From all the boys, we would like to thank Small for a great year.

BACK TO PYRAMID

HILL

Sunday, October 4, 2009

In October, 1959, the Bush Nursing Hospital relocated from Victoria Street to

Gladfield Road. To celebrate the 50 year milestone, a community back to Pyramid Hill will be held on Sunday, 4th October, 2009 in the hospital grounds commencing at 11 a.m. There have been many changes in operations since 1959.

The Hospital provided acute services to the community until October, 1995,

when financial pressures resulted in the hospital closing. However, the

Committee pursued another direction, namely aged care accommodation and

the twenty three bed hostel is a wonderful asset for the community. All

hospital staff and present and former residents of Pyramid Hill and District

are invited to attend. A history book has been compiled; this details health

services provided over many years. For those who have not been back to

Pyramid Hill, or to inspect the Hostel, it is an excellent opportunity to visit the

town and also see what transformation has taken place as far as the hospital

buildings and services are concerned. Further information is available from

Helen Stevens, or Allan Mann or John Carroll.

Gardening for health - starting out

Have you ever thought about planting your own garden, but were not quite sure how to get started?

The b ur best project, in partnership with local plant and garden nurseries is currently promoting plant your own fruit and vegetable

gardens. Kellie Crossley, project manager said that “ there has been a strong community interest in learning to grow your own fruit and vegetables and as spring is here, it’s a great time to start planning your patch” Gardening has many health and therapeutic benefits and can be an activity that everyone can enjoy and find

rewarding. It is good to grow things you can eat; an edible garden is a garden that contains flowers, herbs, seeds, berries and plants that you can eat. Brett from Rochester Sand Soil and Landscaping said that “An edible garden does

not have to be large. Your garden can start small with a few pots and containers or even just a window box with a few suitable cuttings or herbs” Some tips on Getting ready:

The area selected should be flat, receive reasonable amounts of sunlight and some shelter from the wind.

Have a garden tap nearby so you can water plants easily,

Containers can include: Old wheelbarrows or prams, Old bathtubs or laundry tubs with holes for drainage, plastic

and terracotta pots or alternatively purpose-built raised garden beds that can be made to suit your needs.

KOOL CLUB

The young people and their families from the "KOOL Club" after-school program recently joined forces with Landcare Representatives Pam Roberts & John Childs

to help beautify our bush walking track. 58 people braved a gusty Saturday morning in early September to plant 50 new native trees in the school plantation. The

young people delighted in this opportunity and we thank the Dads and KOOL Club leaders who did the backbreaking work of preparing the soil. A very big thank

you also goes to Pam and John for the mentoring they provide in caring for our environment. The hard work was well rewarded with a gigantic hamburger feast in

the Lions/Apex Park. A highlight of the program this term was the KOOL Club

Driving Challenge. We discovered some very promising drivers as the young people navigated our street scape obeying road signs, rules and the instructions of two very astute Police Officers, as well as enjoying snacks as our Petrol Station and Take-

Away stops. The program explored the principles of prayer that were inspired by

their driving experiences.

KOOL Club returns mid Term 4 and more details will follow in the coming weeks.

MEDIA RELEASE VOLUNTEERS

VOICE COMMUNITY

CONCERN OVER UFU’S CAMPAIGN

Today’s UFU rally is just another attempt to increase pressure on the CFA and MFB as part of current industrial negotiations for their 2009 Enterprise Bargaining

Agreement .

VFBV spokesman Allan Monti says “part of the UFU’s claim is for more paid firefighters working shift work for greater income and promotion opportunities.”

The Union wants to expand its financial membership.

In other words union bosses at UFU are simply doing what unions do – that’s what they are paid for.

“They’ll use any argument and tap any public emotion to drive their claims.”

“It’s inappropriate to try and manipulate public emotions over ‘Black Saturday’ and other fire tragedies as part of their campaign.” Mr Monti said “Currently thousands of trained and qualified CFA Volunteers are on call 24 hours a day to protect most of

suburban Melbourne and all of provincial and country Victoria.”

“Our 60,000 Volunteers are supported and supplemented at about 25 brigades out of over 1200 brigades by 500 paid firefighters.” He said.

CFA’s 500 paid firefighters are on very good wages and conditions. They mostly work a 10/14 roster – two day shifts of 10 hours followed by two night shifts of 14 hours.

They sleep during the night shift in specially built single bedrooms at fire stations but are on call.

This shift cycle is four days on and four days off.

They receive a range of good allowances for aspects of their shifts.

They also get 12 weeks paid annual leave each year.

“The UFU want to greatly increase their members at CFA regardless of need and any better use of limited financial resources.” Mr. Monti said

The CFA Chief Officer and local volunteers have determined that additional paid firefighters are needed at 10 brigades in the near future.

They are mainly needed for day shift only to flexibly meet local needs where

sufficient volunteers are not available at the moment – mainly during week days.

But the UFU is pushing for the initial allocation of paid firefighters at 25 brigades to work day and night shifts.

And they have another 50 – 100 brigades where they want paid firefighters around the clock when the CFA says this is totally unnecessary.

Mr. Monti said “VFBV has one objective – to maintain and build an even more effective Volunteer based CFA and that includes deploying paid staff where they are really needed for community safety.”

“We are steadfast that industrial relations agendas and union campaigns can’t be allowed to drive public safety funding.

Community safety is too important.”

LOCKINGTON BOWLS CLUB

Eighty bowlers graced the greens on Thursday for the “Locky Traders”

Open Fours including visitors from Calivil, Gunbower, Rich River,

Elmore, Rochester, City of Echuca, Moama, Tongala, Ky Valley View and

several members. Club President welcomed all bowlers and thanked

the sponsors for their collective support.

With light drizzle and overcast skies the commencement of

play was delayed for ten minutes.

However once play started the display of bowls were a teat to watch.

Heavy rain late in the day caused the abandonment of the fourth game.

There were four three game winners in contention with the Tongala rink of

Barry Martin, Don Murray, Ivan Tinning and Geoff Tinning (s) scoring

79 points taking home the major trophies ahead of the star studded

Gunbower line-up comprising Ross Morton, Vincent Di l lon, Dick

Burmeister and Frank Tonn (s) 78 points plus 42 shots on a countback

from Norm Hodge, Harry Linas, Charlie Pavone and Graham Harrison

(s) 78 points plus 34 shots. On 77 points was the team of Greg Clymo,

Maurie Vick, Jim Harris and Roy Perks (s).

Last Tuesday the women had a good roll up for the social bowls.

The winning team was Betty Mustey, Joy Weller, Colleen Holman and Rhonda

Gallagher (s).

The previous week Katherine Van den Bosch, Annie Haines, Colleen Holman and Alice McMinn (s) cruised to victory. Rhonda Gallagher and mother Marie Davie

bowled well in the recent Moama 4 day Pairs to finish with 5 wins out of

seven games. The pair claimed the scalp of world renowned Carmen

Anderson in the final game.

On Friday night the barbeque and practice was well attended with Phillip

Cunnington collecting the members draw.

Social bowls will be played on Saturday afternoon starting at 1.00pm

in casual dress.

On Tuesday the women enjoyed wonderful conditions for the social

bowls event. The winning team was Annette Brereton, Gwen Haines and

Alice McMinn (s) in a polished display of lawn bowls.

The special competition winner at the recent tournament was Sam Ireland

from Ky Valley View.

At the barbeque / practice evening Gwen Haines collected the lucky

members draw before a large gathering of members.

The pennant teams go into battle this week with good numbers. Division

two play at Echuca against Echuca White, division three play host to Rich

River White and division four travel to Rochester to play Red. Best of luck to

all teams.

Entries are being sought for the Waterwheel Classic Fours star event

to be held on Sunday 25th October commencing at 10.00am. Contact

Gordon Haines or Ian Holman for details.

LOCKINGTON GOLF CLUB

 21ST SEPTEMBER 2009

Greg Hann is the 2009 Lockington Golf Club Handicap Matchplay Champion after defeating Kevin Humbert 1 up in the final played on Saturday. In a match of fluctuating fortunes, Humbert began well to be 3 up after 3, but Hann fought back to square the match by the 6th.

Humbert regained the lead and was 1 up by the 11th, but Hann won the 16th to take the lead back. The contest was squared after Humbert birdied the 17th, but Hann won the 18th with a par to capture the title and go back-to-back after

winning the 2008 title.

Saturday’s stroke round was highlighted by a brilliant round of 71-13-58 by Steve Holt to win both the Privilege Cup and A Grade honours. Grant Humbert was runner-up in A Grade with a fine 69-5-64.

Des Pentreath won B Grade with 86-19-67, with Ray Brereton next best (85-17-68). Rick Hasty was in scintillating form and won C Grade with 90-27-63. Ron

Dixon played really well to finish runner-up (89-25-64).

28TH SEPTEMBER 2009

Last Wednesday the Lockington Golf Club ladies played one of their special events for the year, the Mary Robins Trophy, played in fond memory of a much-loved past member. Mary’s daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Peter Tate, who play at Devil Bend, made the long trip up and played on the day, and enjoyed great memories and a delicious afternoon tea with the players.

The trophy was won by Pauline Humbert, who was thrilled to win it for the first time after many years of trying. She began brilliantly with 21 points on the first 9 but then got a bit wobbly on the second nine. Urged on by her playing

partners Heather Tate and Lois Chugg, she steadied to eventually finish with 37 points and win by just one point from Verna Clymo, with Sue Harris close up on 35.

Captain Bev Muhleisen enjoyed a win in B Grade with 34 points, narrowly from President Phyllis Macfarlane (34). And in another close finish, President Phyl’s team defeated Captain Bev’s team, 160-158.

Nearest the pins: 3rd shot 12th – Annette Brereton; 2nd shot 9th – Annette Brereton. Straightest drive – Pauline Humbert. Verna Clymo progressed to the Handicap Matchplay final with a 4-up victory over Leanne McInnes,

which means that Verna will play Phyllis for the Handicap

Matchplay title.

Saturday’s 2-man ambrose event was played in challenging conditions, with the winners taking home the Pentreaths Performers of the Day vouchers. Scratch

winners – Brett Stone & Sam Newth (Bamawm) 67. Nett winners – Steve Palling & Mick Giorgianni 69-7.5-61.5.

Ball comp – Bill McIntyre & Stuart Newton (69-7-62), Terry

Thomas & Steve Holt (70-6-64).

Nearest the pins: 7th – Sam Newth; 2nd shot 12th – Sam

Newth; 2nd shot 18th for the 6-pack smack – Steve Holt; 17th – Kevin Humbert. Neither the Echuca CIH eagles nest on the 3rd, or Captain Bricka’s yardstick on the 17th was won, and will jackpot to 6 balls and $37 for next week.

Despite inclement conditions, 44 players braved Friday’s weather to play in the annual Lockington & District Bush Nursing Centre Charity Day. Visitors from Bamawm, Calivil, Rich River and Mitiamo generously supported the

day which proved to be a most successful fundraiser. Richard Caiolfa and Ben Patton from the Rich River Pro Shop provided an excellent coaching and trial session before play commenced, and their involvement in the day

was greatly appreciated.
