LBU REPRESENTED IN MELBOURNE COMPETITION

Congratulations to Rhys Woodland and Nathan Dyson on their selection and

getting the opportunity to represent the LBU football club in the Central Murray under 15’s school boy’s side that played in Melbourne during the school holidays.

Central Murray under 15 players came from Echuca, Mathoura, and as far north as Balranald.

The selection process went over a period of 4 months and a squad of 24 was selected from 50 boys.

The 4 days in Melbourne had the boys staying together not only playing footy but they were also treated to a dinner at the MCG, watching a Richmond training session, went to see the legends footy match and also frequented the cool water at St Kilda beach as a part of their recovery program after each match.

Both boys competed well and gained a great wealth of experience playing football at this next level.

The team won their first two matches against East Gippsland and Wimmera but lost to Hampton in their last match to come runners up in their division.

Well done boys you have done the club proud.

A free drought concert held on Friday July 11 at the Milloo Hall to celebrate a treated and polished floor and freshly painted walls, and to support the local community in this time of drought was a great night. The crowded hall enjoyed 18 items supplied by singers, dancers, instrumentalists, a poet, comedian and drama. Thanks to the support, in particular by the Salvation Army, every family received a gift as they entered, and perhaps won a lucky door prize. Credit is due to Jim Mitchell and his committee on their organisation.

LOCKINGTON & DISTRICT LIVING HERITAGE COMPLEX

Website: Heritage Complex Web Site

Hello Everyone!

This week, we’ll go straight to Gordon Weller’s recollections.

Weller Reminiscences recalled by Gordon Weller in 2009 (Continued).

SCHOOLING

The Weller children were sent by horse and gig to the Bamawm School

until the Lockington School – known then as the Bamawm Railway Station

School – was provided. During the drought of the 1940s, there were

massive frosts, some lasting until midday. A communal plan was

devised to provide a warm drink to the children at recess.

The Mothers Club agreed to provide cocoa and sugar and students were to bring along their own milk which would be heated.

All went well until one family admitted that they had forgotten to save their milk that morning but they had raided the cat’s tin for their contribution!!

LOCKINGTON

Gordon recalls Hopetoun Street Lockington as it was in his childhood.

From north to south, the buildings were as underlined.

First was the Coffee Palace, which contained a café, billiard room and a

hairdressing business. At the rear of the main building were five sleep outs,

later dismantled by George Harrison who used the recovered materials to

builds a residence at 11 McColl Street.

Next door to the Coffee Palace was Keatings’ Drapery, and next to that

Wilfred Harrison built a Café which is now Tas’s Take-Away.

Musteys’ Butcher Shop was next in the line.

Gordon remembers that it had a big ice-box cooler and a chopping block

that seemed to be about six feet across.

Next to the butcher shop was Watsons’ Café, and Arthur Kidd repaired shoes and boots in a little shop at the south end of that building.

In later years, the Billiard Room was relocated from McColl Street to the

next building which, later still, became the Chemist Shop.

Next to this was Cliff Gartside’s Sports Store later operated by Ron Gordon. (This last building was destroyed by fire in recent times).

At the north end of Market Street where the Vickers family now live,

there was a fruit-packing shed managed by Bill Chapman, father of

Geordie Chapman and Betty (Bill) Mustey.

Here, citrus from the Bamawm Orchards was packed, and a bag of ‘seconds’ oranges could be purchased for three pence (approximately 2 cents!).

Gordon recalls how “jolly good they were too”.

Opposite the Masonic Hall was the Weller Family’s house dam, fed by a

depression from the south which bordered where St Canice`s Catholic

Church now stands on the east side, and ended in a lignum swamp where

the Lockington pre-school has since been built.

Though contamination was a problem, locals would bring meat and nets to the dam to catch yabbies for bait.

In the early 1950s, Lockington was connected to a town water supply and the dam was filled in.

This supply, run by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission, was a two megalitre dam with four large tanks on a high stand filled by a windmill.

Distribution was via wire-banded wooden pipes.

However, after the introduction of the new tower, which holds one megalitre and which was supposed to be world health standard water quality, it was found necessary to roof the tower as roosting pigeons had added high levels of E-coli.

For a period in the early 1950s, the Weller’s conducted a milk-run around

the town with David being the ‘Milko’.  After he left to undertake training as a

policeman, the family maintained a dairy farm dairy licence.

This system allowed customers to come to the farm to collect milk and cream, but it was discontinued when regulations came into force requiring pasteurisation and homogenising of milk.

The capital to meet these requirements was not available nor, Gordon feels, would it have been a viable option.

The Weller Family built a new home in 1948 (Termites having eaten out the

old one) and electricity came to Lockington in 1949.

Arthur built a new cow-shed with six units in the early 1950s and when Gordon married in 1956, he began share-farming with Arthur.

Mr Boyd, the long-time manager of the Rochester Co-Op Butter Factory retired in 1960, and the appointment of a young Alec Buchanan brought many changes as he advanced the swing from can collection to bulk milk.

Weller’s agreed to leave ‘Holdenson & Neilson’ and supply the Co-Op – “Welcome, one 400-gallon bulk milk vat – Goodbye pigs!!” The dairy herd had now increased to 120 and, with time, the vat proved not to be big enough.

Arthur Weller’s ‘new cow-shed’ is now redundant and the milking is carried

out on ‘Smith’s’ and ‘Hewlett’s’, properties which were purchased by

Paul Weller after he came into the family partnership in 1985.

Today, the most productive land on the farm has all been lasered, and pipes

and risers are in place to irrigate about a third of the original farm. Internal

fences are all electrified. The boundary fences, now more than fifty

years old will soon require renewing.

The fourth generation of the Weller family now directs the progress but all

look forward to torrential rain to change the scene after twelve years of

drought.

Thank you, Gordon.

I’ve enjoyed

hearing about your memories of Lockington.

‘Bye for now, Marg O’Brien.

MILLOO CWA

We were warmed by a nice fire at our July meeting as we dodged in between fairy lights and dressing room curtains as the hall was prepared for the concert the following evening. What a wonderful concert and how wonderful the Milloo Hall now looks with clean polished floors and fresh paint work. Discussion took place on whether the Echuca Group CWA should hold a Christmas Pageant/Festival, and what Milloo Branch may be able to contribute. Milloo Branch will celebrate 40 years later in the year, we are not sure how as yet. Magazine Secretary Ivy reported that the Scholarship application forms were in July magazine. International Officer Lorrie gave an interesting report on our Country of Study, "Timor", which was first settled by the Portuguese in 1520; their economy is based on agricultural products. Competition Results: A flower from your garden-1st Val Read, 2nd Elaine Mitchell. Craft: Shades of Pink, Purple & Green- Equal 1st Elaine Mitchell & Val Read. Cooking: 4 cup cakes- 1st Julie Chappel. Next meeting August 13th 1 pm at Milloo Hall. Competitions will be - A flower from your garden; Craft- Winter Woollies; Cookery- Tomato Relish; Miscellaneous-Photo of rural activities.

KOOL CLUB

What’s been happening…

For those of you who haven’t heard of “KOOL Club”… Kool Club is an after school program ran by the local Christian churches.

Local children are able to learn about God while enjoying afternoon tea and fun activities.

The program is under the auspice of the Lockington Business Centre as one of our Neighbourhood house programs.

The program is also supported by the Lockington Consolidated School, where it is held for four weeks each term.

The program began in Term 2 of 2008 and is still going strong…

Term 2 for 2009 saw the participants having a ‘whale of a time’ when they

learnt the Bible story of Jonah. The children had fun making a whale which

‘spat’ out Jonah, a wiggly worm, stress balls, a memory box, and also enjoyed a visit from missionaries Kenny and his wife Lauren who are currently based in Bendigo. Our family evening was the Veggie Tales animated movie of Jonah which entertained adults and children alike.

KOOL Club is not only enjoyed by the children but also by the volunteer leaders, and

planning for term three is currently underway.

All volunteers have a ‘Working with Children’s check’ and are committed to the program. If you would like to know more about the program or offer your support in any way please feel free to contact Louise Ross at the Lockington Business Centre on 5486-2683 or Katrina Robinson.

LOCKINGTON GOLF CLUB

13TH JULY 2009

Wet conditions made for testing golf for 16 brave and hardy souls at the

Lockington Golf Club for Saturday’s par round. Mark Lyons was the star of the day –

despite losing the first 3 holes, he then reeled off an astonishing 10 successive wins and finished +7, to win both the Pentreaths Performer of the Day voucher, as well as C Grade honours.

Brett Stone finished +3 to win C Grade, ahead of Steve Holt (+2).

Fresh from a let-up, Andrew Wright performed well to score +2 and win B Grade, with Rick Connors runner-up (+1). Rick Hasty (+3) was runner-up in C Grade to Mark Lyons. CCR – 66 (+4).

It was terrific to see Terry Thomas complete 18 holes (and finished a very respectable +1), and it was also excellent to have Devil Bend visitor Peter Tate in the field.

Nearest the pins: 7th – Peter Tate; 2nd shot 12th – Steve Holt; Lucky 17th,

sponsored by Colours, Cuts ‘n’ Curls –

Andrew Wright; 2nd shot 18th for the 6-

pack smack – Andrew Wright.

Both the Echuca CIH eagles nest and Captain Bricka’s yardstick prizes

weren’t won, and jackpot to 12 balls and $107 respectively for next week.

In the last of the Handicap Matchplay first-round matches, Rick Hasty started slowly against Darren Carnie to be 2 down after 8 holes. He then turned the match around by winning 5 of the next 6 holes, to ultimately win 2 and 1.

Last Wednesday the ladies played a stableford round, the second round of the

Mona Hewlett Trophy.

In a close finish, international traveller Lois Chugg was victorious with 34

points, ahead of Leanne McInnes and Bev Muhleisen, who both

finished with 33.

Footy tipping progress scores after 14 rounds:

Bo & Yvette McCormick (84), Brett Stone (82), Rohan Chugg (81).

NAFTA – Mark Lyons (49), Brayden Angove (60), Marcus Angove (61).

20TH JULY 2009

Golfers played a stroke round for the Monthly Medal at Lockington on Saturday.

The in-form Steve Holt returned the day’s best of 76-13-63 to win the Medal, in addition to A Grade honours.

Mick Giorgianni was runnerup with a solid 75-10-65. Armed with new glasses, Rohan

Chugg returned to form with a terrific 83-18-65 to romp home victorious in B Grade. Runner-up was Greg Hann (88-18-70), on a countback from Brian Malone.

C Grade was similarly clear-cut, with Ian Maddison in top form, finishing

with 101-36-65. Travis Mancer was next best with 94-24-70.

good shot on the 3rd. Captain Bricka’s yardstick prize wasn’t won either, and

jackpots to $118.50 for next week.

Last Wednesday the ladies played a stroke round in tough conditions, with

Elaine Wright the winner of both the day’s event (113-34-79) and the nearest the pin prize (3rd shot 5th).

Lockington golfers have been enjoying playing in district events, and have

tasted success. Steve Holt won the B Grade Nett Perpetual Trophy

at Mitiamo’s 36 Holes Stroke event, while Ian Haines won the B Grade

(am) prize. Des Pentreath and Bill “Grandad” McIntyre combined well to

win Division 1 at Jarklin’s Mens Fourball event.

Michele Mustey, Lois Chugg and Phyllis Macfarlane were runners-up by

just one point in Mitiamo’s Jean Hellsten Bowl event.

Michele’s excellent round of 79 off the stick won her the scratch event as well, and

reduced her handicap to 9.

Lockington and District

Business Centre

Over 70 boxes have already gone out via the Business Centre to Fire Survivors of Black Saturday.

We recently received this letter which we would like to share with your readers:

“To all our dear family, friends, workmates, neighbours, students, CFA and new found friends, where do we start to thank you. Your generous time, courage, labour, machinery, food, hardware, gifts, money, use of your homes when we evacuated, and your words of encouragement and endless amounts of hugs and tears, have

made the recovery of our spirits soar! We feel humbled by the ongoing support and offers of help then, now and in the following months of re-fencing, re-building, and rehabilitating our black dusty sooty landscape. Phone calls, emails, cards and hugs in the street have been overwhelming. Please accept our utmost thanks

and appreciation for your help, advice and time, with the ongoing knowledge that we are surrounded by many very special people.

Love to you all

To all the people, family & friends of the Lockington District. A very big thank you for your prayers and support, and for the 3 fabulous recovery gifts received by Mitchell (15), Frances (11) and Lucy (7). Thank you. Marie & John Noonan, Barfold, Victoria.”

We still have some boxes left to be distributed but are keen to make sure that they reach the people who they have been prepared for.

We hope to distribute the rest in the next few months.

Thank you to everyone who donated items, and helped us in this campaign.

We were glad we could do something, albeit small, on behalf of the Lockington community, in response to this disaster.
