Dear Editor, I write to you to avoid any potential confusion around the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund 2009. It is important to set the record straight and provide reassurance to your community members that funds donated are and will continue to be distributed to those affected by Victoria's fires. Readers of your publication would be aware that all Victorian Bushfire Appeal funds are being distributed through the Department of Human Services under the oversight of an Independent Advisory Panel of community leaders chaired by John Landy, our respected former Governor. This panel sets all guidelines for the use of funds and is committed to reporting publicly on its work at regular intervals. It is now just over four months since the tragedy of the fires. Funds have been flowing in line with world's best practice and $113 million has been transferred into the hands of those affected. Already $270 million has been allocated for expenditure from the fund. Many of those eligible for grants have not yet stepped forward and this is fully understandable in the light of the trauma they have experienced. We need to be patient and understand that it will take time for individuals and communities to recover. Copies of the panel's recent report can be accessed at the Department of Human Services website at www.dhs.vic.gov.au or the Premier's website at www.premier.vic.gov.au All funds raised through Red Cross are held in a Trust Account, and no administrative costs are taken from these funds either by the Victorian Government or Red Cross. Red Cross is totally independent of government and we are of course strictly impartial and neutral. We work with governments of all political persuasions when responding to natural disasters. Our job is to help communities in an emergency. The Victorian Bushfires Appeal 2009 was launched as a partnership between Red Cross, the Victorian Government and the Federal Government. We would like to assure your readers that Red Cross will continue to support bushfire affected communities and we have every confidence that every cent donated to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal, and the interest earned on those funds will go to the people and communities affected by this disaster. Thank you for the opportunity to set the record straight. Robert Tickner, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Red Cross. |

LOCKINGTON
& DISTRICT LIVING HERITAGE COMPLEX
Website: Heritage
Complex Web Site Hello Everyone! It has been another quiet fortnight at
the Heritage Complex, but our most recent committee meeting was a notable
one. A presentation was made to Bernie Crumpler who is leaving our group.
Bernie’s involvement with the Heritage Complex in recent years has been
quite significant and has been very much appreciated. His work in the reconstruction of the Diggora West store
façade, and particularly in the restoration of Bon’s tram, has
been greatly admired, both by fellow committee members and by the visiting public. In addition to this,
Bernie has been a wonderful committee man – regularly attending
meetings, working bees and assisting at events of all sorts. So many little
odd jobs carried out behind the scenes at the Complex have been Bernie’s
work; door catches, shelving, display boards etc. His little drink cart,
making its way to and fro across the Tractor Rally site, has been a
welcome added feature to that event in the past couple of years. His contribution overall has been
invaluable. We will all miss Bernie and wish him and his family all the best
for the future. Good wishes are also in order this
fortnight for committee members, Joe and Julie Chappel, who will be
celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage on Congratulations, Joe and Julie!! We hope
that the anniversary celebrations are memorable and that you both enjoy many
more years together. As I mentioned in the last issue, there
is still quite a bit of Gordon Weller’s memoir. We’ll return to it now. Weller Reminiscences recalled by Gordon
Weller in 2009 (Continued). The Weller family experienced a terrible
year in 1936, the year when Cliff died of consumption. Vances, who had been
sub-leasing the farm left and John Weller, then in his sixties, could not cope.
Clara, who was ill herself, asked Arthur to return to Lockington and take
over the farm. Arthur (Gordon’s father) had
married Mary Scott in 1932, and lived with his family in Strathfieldsaye
where he milked a small herd of twelve cows and grew tomatoes on two acres of
land. At his mother’s request, he and his family came back to the
Lockington farm, and have farmed it ever since. Clara Weller died that same
year. In a move arranged by his son Kevin, John
Weller and his two younger children, Muriel and Mervyn, relocated to Benalla,
taking with them what had been Cliff’s hobby – Breeding quality greyhounds. ‘Charcoal Charlie’ and
‘Lady Brindle’ are names recalled by Gordon as having won races.
When Gordon’s grandfather John left Benalla, two dogs were returned to
the Weller farm at Lockington, and after
John’s death, the dogs were sold to Bill Souter, the local bookie, for
fifty pounds. After some time, and some rather involved
and complicated negotiations, Arthur bought the farm from the rest of his
siblings at valuation. In late 1936, he and his family purchased a three-unit
Moffet / Virtue milking plant because labor to hand milk was unreliable and
expensive. There was no electricity, with power being supplied by a two and a half horse power generator. Other
equipment included a hand separator and a forty-gallon vat. The family also
ran free-range pigs! Gordon remembers that, at that time, the garbage disposal in Lockington was
over the back fence. He recalls, as a small boy, being sent to fetch home a
sow and litter that had been cleaning up behind Fiedlers’ store (now
Pentreaths’). Sanitary disposal for the town was by night cart,
disposed into open trenches on the Weller farm behind the recreation reserve,
with this land being rented by the shire. A visit from Mr Lumsden, the dairy
supervisor, instigated a change in this latter arrangement. He explained the
quarantine laws to Arthur, stating that if there was an out break of a contagious
disease the farm would be closed. Notice to quit was given to the shire and,
after much argument they left, with the fertiliser subsequently being added to the story, but once again we will leave it
for next time. ‘Bye for now, Marg O’Brien. BEREAVEMENT THANK YOU Joe and
