Heather Gordon, Betty Cunnington.

Front: Beryl Golden, Jacki Clay, Anne Fiedler, Evelyn Anderson.

Lockington Unit of Red Cross held their AGM on June 29th. Denise Williams

(pictured below) from the Red Cross regional office attended and was the

guest speaker.

Denise told of the changes that are taking place in Red Cross administration and practice, encouraging members to be patient through the changes.

The Australian Red Cross 2009 International Project will be an extension of the project in 2008, for the Guangxi Community Based Disaster Preparedness Project in Southern China. Mention was made of concerns that have been raised in some communities regarding the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund, and a letter to newspapers, from the CEO of Australian Red Cross, was provided for our local paper.

At the election of officer bearers, Madge Cunnington asked to retire from the position of President, and Betty Cunnington was elected to take her place. Madge

Cunnington has given many years of able leadership which is greatly appreciated.

Vice Presidents- Sandra White & Beryl Golden;

Secretary- Joan Harry; Treasurer- Susan Dae were also elected.

The next meeting will be on August 24th at 10.30 am, and we would be glad to welcome new members.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor, I write to you to avoid any potential confusion around the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund 2009.

It is important to set the record straight and provide reassurance to your community members that funds donated are and will continue to be distributed to those affected by Victoria's fires. Readers of your publication would be aware that all Victorian Bushfire Appeal funds are being distributed through the Department of Human Services under the oversight of an Independent Advisory Panel of community leaders chaired by John Landy, our respected former Governor. This panel sets all guidelines for the use of funds and is committed to reporting publicly on its work at regular intervals. It is now just over four months since the tragedy of the fires. Funds have been flowing in line with world's best practice and $113 million has been transferred into the hands of those affected. Already $270 million has been allocated for expenditure from the fund. Many of those eligible for grants have not yet stepped forward and this is fully understandable in the light of the trauma they have experienced. We need to be patient and understand that it will take

time for individuals and communities to recover. Copies of the panel's recent report can be accessed at the Department of Human Services website at www.dhs.vic.gov.au or the Premier's website at www.premier.vic.gov.au

All funds raised through Red Cross are held in a Trust Account, and no administrative costs are taken from these funds either by the Victorian Government or Red Cross. Red Cross is totally independent of government and we are of course strictly impartial and neutral. We work with governments of all political persuasions when responding to natural disasters. Our job is to help communities in an emergency. The Victorian Bushfires Appeal 2009 was launched as a partnership between Red Cross, the Victorian Government and the Federal Government. We would like to assure your readers that Red Cross will continue to support bushfire affected communities and we have every confidence that

every cent donated to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal, and the interest earned on those funds will go to the people and

communities affected by this disaster.

Thank you for the opportunity to set the record straight.

Robert Tickner,

Chief Executive Officer,

Australian Red Cross.

LOCKINGTON & DISTRICT LIVING HERITAGE COMPLEX

Website: Heritage Complex Web Site

Hello Everyone!

It has been another quiet fortnight at the Heritage Complex, but our most recent committee meeting was a notable one. A presentation was made to Bernie Crumpler who is leaving our group. Bernie’s involvement with the Heritage Complex in recent years has been quite significant and has been very much appreciated. His work in the

reconstruction of the Diggora West store façade, and particularly in the restoration of Bon’s tram, has been greatly admired, both by fellow committee members and by the

visiting public. In addition to this, Bernie has been a wonderful committee man – regularly attending meetings, working bees and assisting at events of all sorts. So many little odd jobs carried out behind the scenes at the Complex have been Bernie’s work; door catches, shelving, display boards etc. His little drink cart, making its way to and fro

across the Tractor Rally site, has been a welcome added feature to that event in the past couple of years.

His contribution overall has been invaluable. We will all miss Bernie and wish him and his family all the best for the future.

Good wishes are also in order this fortnight for committee members, Joe and Julie Chappel, who will be celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage on 12 July 2009.

Congratulations, Joe and Julie!! We hope that the anniversary celebrations are memorable and that you both enjoy many more years together.

As I mentioned in the last issue, there is still quite a bit of Gordon Weller’s memoir.

We’ll return to it now.

Weller Reminiscences recalled by Gordon Weller in 2009 (Continued).

The Weller family experienced a terrible year in 1936, the year when Cliff died of consumption. Vances, who had been sub-leasing the farm left and John Weller, then in his sixties, could not cope. Clara, who was ill herself, asked Arthur to return to Lockington and take over the farm.

Arthur (Gordon’s father) had married Mary Scott in 1932, and lived with his family in Strathfieldsaye where he milked a small herd of twelve cows and grew tomatoes on two acres of land. At his mother’s request, he and his family came back to the Lockington farm, and have farmed it ever since. Clara Weller died that same year.

In a move arranged by his son Kevin, John Weller and his two younger children, Muriel and Mervyn, relocated to Benalla, taking with them what had been Cliff’s hobby –

Breeding quality greyhounds.

‘Charcoal Charlie’ and ‘Lady Brindle’ are names recalled by Gordon as having won races. When Gordon’s grandfather John left Benalla, two dogs were returned to the Weller

farm at Lockington, and after John’s death, the dogs were sold to Bill Souter, the local bookie, for fifty pounds.

After some time, and some rather involved and complicated negotiations, Arthur bought the farm from the rest of his siblings at valuation. In late 1936, he and his family purchased a three-unit Moffet / Virtue milking plant because labor to hand milk was unreliable and expensive. There was no electricity, with power being supplied by a two

and a half horse power generator. Other equipment included a hand separator and a forty-gallon vat. The family also ran free-range pigs! Gordon remembers that, at that time,

the garbage disposal in Lockington was over the back fence. He recalls, as a small boy, being sent to fetch home a sow and litter that had been cleaning up behind Fiedlers’ store (now Pentreaths’). Sanitary disposal for the town was by night cart, disposed into open trenches on the Weller farm behind the recreation reserve, with this land being rented by the shire. A visit from Mr Lumsden, the dairy supervisor, instigated a change in this latter arrangement. He explained the quarantine laws to Arthur, stating that

if there was an out break of a contagious disease the farm would be closed. Notice to quit was given to the shire and, after much argument they left, with the fertiliser

subsequently being added to the Rochester depot. This was located at what is now the north /west corner of the Campaspe golf club. There is still a little more of Gordon’s

story, but once again we will leave it for next time.

‘Bye for now, Marg O’Brien.

BEREAVEMENT THANK YOU

Joe and Dorothy Harper

As many know I am home after what I consider to be an honor & privilege to

have been able to care for my parents, in their home (Geelong) over

the final few months of mum’s life.

She passed away peacefully at home on 26-05-2009, laid to rest at the

Wedderburn Cemetery on 02-06- 2009.

Thank all for your ongoing support understanding & care expressed to us over this difficult time.

In particular I wish to thank John & family for allowing me the time to be

with mum in her time of need, not only these past few months but over the

duration of her illness (20mths).

Without their continued support I could not have nursed mum over this

time.

Special thanks also to the staff at REHDS especially the great team

at the hostel for their ongoing support.

LBU FOOTBALL

LBU Under 17’s match report 27/6/09

LBU traveled to Mt Pleasant this week.

Right from the first bounce Mounts were on the attack but to LBU’s credit they fought on and lead at the first change by 2 goals. With one of the greatest rev up’s in all time LBU came out firing, kicking 5 goals straight in a matter of minutes with one of the best team quarters played this year by LBU, they lead at half time by 8 goals. With handy Ruck work by Greg Carne and Matt McInnes and great running by Hayden Chappel and Rodney Reeves gave the forwards plenty of opportunities to convert. LBU led by 11 goals at three quarter time. With great running off the half back flank by Josh Cairns and Luke Bish, applying great pressure to Mounts ball carriers.

LBU stormed home winning by 16 goals.

Jeremy Mundie ended up with 8 goals, Matt McInnes, Hayden Chappel and Greg Carne finished with 2 each.

Hayden Chappel received best on followed by Gavin Broad, Josh Cairns, Jeremy Mundie, Luke Bish, Greg Carne, Rodney Reeves and Nathan Bacon.

LBU UNDER 14’S FOOTBALL RESULTS

Results 19/6/09

LBU travelled to Kyabram to take on St. Augustine’s on Friday in a game which was competitive and played with great spirit. The Cats defence was tested but thanks to the desperation of many players, the sides efforts were rewarded. Jessie Pearse and Nathan Dyson repelled many of St. Augustine’s forward ventures with their high

marking and hard tackling. Trent Bacon, Ryan Jensen and Tommy Eade weaved their way through the centre, giving their forwards many chances. Joel McHall had a

stellar game, finishing with six goals. Luke Gronow, Kurt Bacon & Jye Kuiper battled well. Joel Felmingham received a heavy knock, but bounced back unscathed.

Coach Daryl Jensen congratulated the team on a high standard display of football.

LBU 8.9 (57) defeated St. Augustine’s 6.7 (43)

Goals – Joel McHall 6, Trent Bacon 2

Awards – Jessie Pearse, Joel McHall, Trent Bacon, Nathan Dyson, Ryan Jensen, Sam Wolfe, Tommy Eade, Luke Gronow

Encouragement – Kurt Bacon, Joel Felmingham

Results – 26/6/09

In a low-scoring match, LBU played Echuca White under lights. The conditions were wet and slippery, with sleeting rain falling throughout the game. Josh McPhee was strong in the ruck and kept his feet in the wet conditions. Trent Bacon, Odin Jones, Ryan Jensen and Jessie Pearse provided plenty of pace, while Joel McHall

was good, getting a lot of the ball as he burrowed into the packs. Tommy Eade and Luke Sciotto showed strength and commitment. It was not until the third quarter, Jarrod Monaghan, assisted by Sam Wolfe, got LBU’s first goal, with an impressive snap. The Felmingham brothers, Joel and Josh, were solid in defence, and had great support from Aaron O’Brien.

LBU 3.9 (27) defeated Echuca White 2.2 (14)

Goals – Jarrod Monaghan, Jessie Pearse, Trent Bacon

Awards – Joel McHall, Trent Bacon, Ryan Jensen, Jessie

LOCKINGTON GOLF CLUB

29TH JUNE 2009

The third and final round of the Lockington Golf Club Mens Championships was played on Saturday in wet conditions.

Grant Humbert captured his 11th Club Champion title with a closing round of

78, for a 3-round score of 223. He won by 9 shots from a fast-finishing

Stewart Mancer, who returned an excellent 73, with Kevin Humbert a

further 4 shots back.

The B Grade leaderboard was congested at the start of the day, but it

was Life Member Des Pentreath who surged clear with a closing round of

87, for a 3-round score of 266 and a 5- shot margin over Rick Connors and

Steve Palling who tied for second.

Don Muhleisen and Darren Carnie finished one shot further back.

The contest for the C Grade title proved to be a titanic arm-wrestle, with

the lead changing hands many times in a seesawing tussle. It was Mark

Lyons who ultimately prevailed, returning a round of 95 to finish on

293 and win his first ever Championship title. Runner up was

Tony Brooke, 4 shots behind, followed by Ron Dixon (298) and Tom Scurrah

(299).

As always, the nett championships proved to be very close contests.

Brett Stone (70-66-67=203) was successful in A Grade, by just 2 shots

from Steve Holt and Stewart Mancer, who both finished on 205. B Grade

was won by Darren Carnie (68-70- 68=206), by just one shot from Don

Muhleisen, with Rick Connors only one shot further back on 208.

Tony Brooke (75-72- 72=219) won C Grade by 3 shots from Tom

Scurrah, with Ron Dixon a further 3 shots back in 3rd place. Don

Muhleisen’s consolation prize was the Veterans Title, winning by 2 shots

from Des Pentreath (209), with Kevin Humbert a further 3 shots back.

the Silver Spoon final. Sue Harris was successful in A Grade with 99-23-76.

Count the putts: A Grade – Sue Harris (24); B Grade – Jenny Holt (29).

Kevin Humbert has been enjoying a successful run at District tournaments,

finishing runner-up at Elmore’s when teamed up with Rick Connors, and

then going one better with Des Pentreath at Calivil, bringing home the

winners’ trophies.

– 6TH JULY 2009

A stroke event was played at Lockington on Wednesday, the third

and final round of the Club Championships for the ladies. Sue Harris captured her first Club Champion title, Jenny Holt won the B Grade title and Phyllis Macfarlane was successful in C Grade. Don Muhleisen was “stung by a hornet” and lost to Shaun “Hornet” Malone 5 and 4. In the most

competitive tussle of the 3, Stuart Newton prevailed over Des Pentreath,

Cemetery Walk

On Monday 21st June, nine members had an outing to the Echuca Cemetery!!

We were guided by Heather, the Secretary of the Echuca Cemetery Trust, who, in the beautiful sunny weather, strolled around

(over two and a half hours) informing us of interesting and historical graves.

She was able to give us a broad overview of the business of cemeteries and burial, explaining details of types of graves and

the ‘rules’ of burial.

Having earlier enjoyed coffee and scones kindly supplied by the cemetery trust, we then went over to the Sportsman’s Club at Moama where we enjoyed a delightful lunch followed by

our meeting.

Betty Mustey gave an extensive report on the State Conference and Betty Wickham also reported on the Church service and concert held at the State Conference.

All members enjoyed a different day out!
