ZAVIER’S WISH IS GRANTED

Photo submitted: Zavier with his grandparents Eileen & Len, and brother Kyeran.

In the Lockington Community News issue of 18 January, 2008, the same heading as above, told of Zavier Mancer-Page being granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation a visit to Euro Disney in Paris.

Unfortunately due to a setback in Zavier’s health the trip never came to being, but he had the opportunity to change his wish, which was granted. On May 23, 2009 three members of the Goulburn Valley branch of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Myra Mitchell, Carole Breust

and Donald Hughan came and presented Zavier with a much-wanted Suzuki 125 motorcycle. Zavier's grandparents Eileen and Len Mancer, and his twin brother Kyeran were in attendance to witness all the excitement of the motorcycle's arrival, together with a helmet, boots and outfit, and to photograph Zavier with a smile as big as the bike. Now they are witnesses to Zavier enjoying hours of fun on his motorcycle, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes for children aged up to 18 with a life-threatening illness. For further information please contact Myra Mitchell on 0428-254400.

LOCKINGTON & DISTRICT LIVING HERITAGE COMPLEX

Website: Heritage Complex Web Site

                                                                 Hello Everyone!

It has been a relatively quiet fortnight at the Heritage Complex. Attendance at

the recent committee meeting was not wonderful, but then it is winter and the

weather is cold.

Things will no doubt improve in the weeks to come.

With no current news to report, it seemed that this would be a very good opportunity to

share with you some more recollections of early Lockington.

Earlier this year, about seventy Weller descendants gathered at the Lockington Recreation

Reserve for a family reunion which celebrated the 90th anniversary of the arrival in Lockington of John and Clara (nee Kidd) Weller.

This year also marked the 160th anniversary of the arrival of the first of the Weller family to

immigrate to Australia. They arrived in Melbourne, and then settled at Kangaroo Grounds where they built an inn. This particular building is still there today, and is known as Wellers Restaurant.

The following reminiscences are from Gordon Weller’s memories of what he was told of the

family’s story. He recorded these especially for the reunion. They give us some idea of what Lockington was, and how it developed. We thank Gordon and Joy for sharing them with us.

Weller Reminiscences recalled by Gordon Weller in 2009 The Weller family first owned land at

Kangaroo Grounds in 1856, and built a pub and a store.

John Alexander Weller, born in 1867, was one of ten children five girls and five boys. Their parents were Edward Weller and his wife, Mary (nee Band).

Edward died when John was sixteen.

John trained as a blacksmith and had a fondness for animals and an interest in farming.

His first wife died prematurely, leaving him with four young children, and he later married Clara Kidd.

Together they moved from Kangaroo Grounds to Thomastown, and from there on to a share dairy farm at Korumburra. John and Clara had nine surviving children, when the family was

advised to move north to drier country for health reasons. Their daughter Ruby had T.B.

At the time, farms were being advertised as part of the Bamawm Closer Settlement Scheme. Land for this Scheme had been resumed by the Australian government at a cost of two

pounds per acre. The relevant purchase lease (31 Years) with a one in one water right was ten pounds per acre. John Weller submitted an application, and was one of the few Australian-born applicants to be successful. He was allocated Section A, Allotment 17, Parish of Bamawm.

In 1918, John Weller arrived by train at the Bamawm railway station. The town, at that time known only as ‘Bamawm Railway Station’, consisted of one house, Dycer`s, in Barton Street and

one tent, Cummin`s, in Burns Street, though the streets at that stage were unnamed. In 1921, the town was named Lockington. Mrs Dycer invited John in for a cup of tea. The Weller children who subsequently moved to Lockington were Cora (later to become Mrs Raper), Ruby, Harold,

Mabel (who became Mrs Dumont), Cliff, Arthur, Kevin, and Muriel (later Mrs Neale). Mervyn was born after their arrival in the district. Unfortunately, relocation did not solve Ruby’s health

problem and she passed away about  twelve months after the family moved.

John Weller’s allotted farm had been a part of Robert Archibald`s holding. The original house was of weatherboard construction and it had a “huge kitchen and huge fire place which could take a

huge log”. The roof was timber  shingles, covered by galvanised iron. There was also a straw-thatched shed that acted as a stable, as well as shelter for hundreds of sparrows.

(Gordon Weller’s early memories of the farm include a log fence, which indicated that a mass of timber had been cleared along and around the major depression that runs through the

property. When re-fencing the land in the late 1950s, Gordon’s family found a Murray pine strainer post which would have been cut on farm.) John Weller’s allotment consisted of

one hundred and eight acres, of which  one hundred were registered as suitable and commendable for irrigation. The soil types on the farm were not appropriate for horticultural land, and were more suited to pasture than lucerne. The exception was the sandpit paddock bump. In the 1920s, Harold and Arthur laid this section out for irrigation, using a buckboard to grade

and check-bank. It was watered once a month and then cut the following week. The carrying capacity of the farm was thirty milkers in a good year, and its size was increased in the 1920s, when a further 20 acres was purchased from “Cobbetts” In 1928, Gordon’s Grandmother Clara

Weller had the Coffee Palace built, at the corner of Hopetoun and McColl Streets in Lockington. Constructed using gravel from a sand-pit on the Weller farm, this was the first solid structure to be built on-site in Hopetoun Street. Its role was to provide accommodation for the workforce that

had come to construct irrigation channel extensions via Kotta, and west of the Kotta Road. At that time too, other workmen were employed in the district in the linking-up of phone lines. Clara

Weller’s new undertaking also provided employment for her two daughters, Cora and Mabel. Fresh vegetables for use in the Coffee Palace were acquired from a Chinese gentleman named

Jimmy Goon, who in those days ran a market garden on about three acres of the Weller farm at the site of the present easterly town dam. At that time, other residents in Lockington also obtained their fresh vegetables from this source. There is quite a bit more of Gordon’s

story, but we will leave some for next time.

‘Bye for now, Marg O’Brien.

It wasn't until the second quarter that Ryley Mills kicked accurately to Sam Wolfe allowing Wolfe to score the first goal. Odin Jones, Nathan Dyson, Ryan Jensen, Trent Bacon and Joe Wolfe worked hard around the midfield. Jessie Pearse, Aaron O’Brien, Luke Gronow were solid in

defence while Luke Sciotto, Joel McHall and Tommy Eade continually put pressure on the opposition causing many turnovers. Coach Daryl Jensen praised the team for the determination and commitment resulting in a win.

LBU played in a variety of positions, adapting well to each one. Nathan Dyson and Jessie Pearse were good performers. Josh McPhee rucked well. The strength of the midfielders in Ryan Jensen, Joel McHall, Joe Wolfe and Trent Bacon was prominent. Sam Wolfe, Jarrod Monaghan, Aaron O’Brien and Luke Sciotto battled hard. LBU were big winners in a very even team effort.

UNDER 17s

On Saturday 13/6 LBU came up against the second top team White Hills at home.

White Hills came out strong but we fought hard and came out on top. 11-13 to 2-8.

The rovers worked hard in the first and second quarters getting some good clearances from the centre. The third quarter saw White Hills have most of the play. The lasts quarter saw LBU come up with lots of run off the half back line. Best players went to Brodie Collins, Jeremy

Mundie the other awards went to Hayden Chappel, Rhys Woodland, Luke Bish, Paddy Gardiner, Rodney Reeves, Greg Carne and Jessie Collins.

It was a good team effort that bought us out on top.

LBU V ELMORE REPORT 20/6/09

LBU traveled to Elmore this week and played in damp and cold conditions. LBU only started with 18 players on their team list and played against a very strong and improved Elmore side. In the first quarter Elmore played very hard at the ball and took the honors until quarter

time. After a rev up at quarter time LBU played a lot better brand of football, with Jarrod Bacon kicking 3 goals, Gavin Broad 2 and Marcus Angove 1 coming out on top at half time. LBU continued on well and played their normal brand of running footy to come out on top even after a strong come back by Elmore in the last quarter. Best player for the day was Paddy Gardiner

kicking three goals, Jarrod Bacon, Greg Carne who dominated in the ruck, Hayden Chappel, Rodney Reeves, Josh Cairns and Luke Bish who played a great tagging roll.

Final scores 13:13 to 9 goals 6.

LOCKINGTON LIONS REPORT

PRESIDENTS REPORT - Another wonderful year for Lockington Lions! My special thanks to Lions Lady Mary for her help and understanding.

The Induction of three new members at District Governor Les Harrison and Lions Lady Robyn’s visit was a great start to our year.

The introduction of Junior Debating at Lockington Consolidated School by Lion Donald Watson and Lions Lady Sheelagh was well received; liaising with Echuca West School was a bonus.

Long serving members Ian Palmer and Ray Mustey were presented with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and the Chris August Award in that order.

The awards were well deserved.

Visitation to surrounding Lions Clubs and the Annual Combined Social with Elmore and Rochester Clubs was most enjoyable. Lions also attended the 40th Charter Anniversary of Stanhope and Rochester Clubs. Guest speakers were of great value to our dinner meetings and were well received by members. I was indeed privileged to introduce my brother Maurice to the members. He has spent the past 52 years in the mission field in India.

The proposed “Men’s Shed’ was well supported by Lions. The V6 District

Foundation site at the Elmore Field Days was staffed part time by Lockington Lions.

The bush fire tragedy brought out the best in our community with local members of the Fire Brigade going to the front and the Lions Club making a substantial donation. Individual Lions also made generous contributions.

A Lockington family lost their possessions in a house fire. Lions initiated an appeal and Lions V6 District Foundation donated $2 500.00 within 24 hours.

The family was extremely grateful for the assistance.

Lions celebrated their 35 Year Charter Anniversary by taking Lions Ladies to dinner. Without our Lions Ladies, Lions could not function.

The continuing drought conditions and scarcity of irrigation water has caused much hardship throughout the district and beyond. Lions have helped where ever possible and we all look forward to better days.

LOCKINGTON GOLF CLUB

14TH JUNE 2009 –

The 2009 Club Championships commenced on Saturday in challenging weather conditions. Shooting for his 11th title, reigning Club Champion Grant Humbert began his defence in fine

style with a terrific round of 71 to set up a 7 shot lead over Kevin Humbert, with Mick Giorgianni a further 3 shots back.

B Grade provides a congested leader board , with 5 players separated by only 3 shots.

Last year’s C Grade champion Steve Palling finished with an 89, to lead Rick Connors, Darren

Carnie and Don Muhleisen by only one, with Des Pentreath a further 2 shots back.

Mark Lyons is the first-round leader in C Grade after his solid round of 95.

Tom Scurrah trails by only 3 shots, with Ron Dixon next best on 99. Tony Brooke is not out of contention back on 101, especially considering his round was a tale of 2 contrasting nines, 46 out and 55 in.

Other results from Saturday’s round: Gartside Cup Qualifiers – Don Muhleisen, Darren Carnie, Stuart Newton. Standby – Rick Connors (countback Mark Lyons).
