Congratulations to the Lockington Consolidated School on their successful Debutante Ball –

 “A night of mystique”.

As the debutantes and partners were introduced by MC Sue Neale and presented to Paul and Chrissy Weller, Brenton and Gwenda Taylor, in the beautifully decorated Community Centre,

their activities, attitudes or feelings were revealed.

(BJ - alias Brayden Angove – copped the most!).

Tennyson's Big Morning Tea

Thankfully a day of pleasant weather greeted us on 31st May, which brought a crowd of 44

people throughout the day.

A feast of cakes, slices, cream cakes, and a light lunch of soup, sandwiches and sausage rolls fed us, and twenty lucky door prizes were given out.

Raffle prizes... 2 person picnic set won by Tania Bowles, Coffee machine won by Nyree Thorpe, and Tea plunger set won by Karl and Milly Phillips (all raffle prizes were accompanied by a few tea/coffee nick-nacks and a Big Morning Tea Cup)

We were overwhelmed by our communities generosity, when we totalled the donations for the day at $704.

(It has already been put to us that we should do it again next year... so watch this space)

We would like to take this opportunity to extend a big thank-you to all those who attended, and especially to those who helped us put the day on.

Thank you, Andrew and Alison Chappel

FINE DISPLAY OF FINE CHINA

Rhonda Gallagher’s display of fine china at Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea held at

the Heritage Complex was appreciated by many.

(See Marg’s report heritage Centre.)

Barb Walker who travelled from Bouderie, Qld to see her two granddaughters,

Alex and Toni make their debut, enjoyed seeing the display. Barb is pictured left

LOCKINGTON & DISTRICT LIVING HERITAGE COMPLEX

Website: Heritage Complex Web Site

Hello Everyone!

CATERING & OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS

Committee Members at the Complex – particularly the catering subcommittee

and our tour guides – have been quite busy with a series of bookings for visiting groups over

recent weeks.

 It’s good to see that our township and our facility are proving so popular and the members

involved are doing a great job.

The Biggest Morning Tea, hosted at the Complex on Thursday 28 May, went off wonderfully well.

The Devonshire Tea was every bit as delicious as usual and this year, there was an

added attraction.

We are really grateful to Rhonda Gallagher, whose beautiful display of exquisite fine

china proved to be very popular.

 It drew what was probably the largest group of Big Morning Tea visitors that the Complex has welcomed in any particular year during thirteen years of acting as a host venue for this

particular event.

Thank you to everyone who came along to support this extremely worthy cause, to our

PR person Colleen, and a very special ‘Thank You’ to Rhonda.

POST OFFICES

Our committee is endeavouring to record the locations of the Post Offices that have operated

throughout this district since the Selection Era, with the hope of being able to produce a map for display.

Each small settlement within the region had its own Post Office, at a store or possibly a private home.

Sometimes the Post Office was moved to another location within the same general area, depending on who was available to take on the duties of Post Master or Mistress.

Wises’ Victorian Directory of 1899- 1900 lists the following people as local Post Masters; -

Jas Archibald at Pannoo bamawm; Henry M Ham at Pannoo Milloo; Mrs E Sims at Pine Grove; and Fred P Riegel at Pine Grove East. Mrs Elizabeth L O’Brien was shown as

Storekeeper at Tennyson but no Post Office was listed.

Nor was there a Post Office shown for Milloo, which was described as ‘no township’.

By 1912-13, there had been a few changes with the Sands McDougall Directory of that year listing Post Masters as follows: - J Archibald at Pannoo bamawm;

E G Park at Pannoo milloo;

E Sims at Pine Grove;

 K McIntyre at Pine Grove East;

W Reddrop at Piavella;

J H James at Wanurp; and E O’Brien at Tennyson.

If you can provide some relevant details for this project, we would love to hear from you. Just talk to a Committee Member, or write to the Complex at P O Box 150, Lockington,

Vic. 3563.

MORE FROM THE DIRECTORIES

Lockington had yet to come into existence but, while looking at the Directories for the above details, it was interesting to read a little more about the district so long ago.

 Most of the people listed in 1899-1900 were farmers, with an occasional teacher. In addition, Owen O’Brien and William G Rigby were Dealers at Tennyson; William Parr was a Carpenter at Pine Grove East; John Neve was listed as a Contractor at Pine Grove; Watson & Co were stock and station agents, with Henry Lee as their manager, at Pannoo Bamawm and Robert Nankivell worked as a Surveyor there.

The blacksmith played a vital role in the community, constructing and maintaining farm implements and horse-drawn vehicles, as well as keeping the horses shod. Michael O’Brien was the blacksmith at Pannoo bamawm, John Hucheson at Pannoo Milloo, J & C Anselmi at Pine Grove East, and Robert Yeoman at Tennyson.

Despite there being no irrigation in this region at that time, farming communities were being encouraged to milk cows and to produce cream. James Watson ran a Creamery at Tennyson, Alfred Jasper ran one at Pine Grove East, and at Pine Grove, Charles W Sims had Butter Factory.

By 1912-13, all of those listed in the directory – even those running the Post Offices – were described as Farmers.

The blacksmiths, the creameries, and the butter factory had disappeared, and the coming of Irrigation to the district was about to make a considerable difference to the lives of the residents.

That’s it for me this time. Once again, I’ve enjoyed delving into the past.

I hope that you did too.

‘Bye for now, Marg O’Brien.

Letters And Notices

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor

On the 16th May , some 18 members of the Rotary Club of Essendon North headed north to

Lockington in reply to an invitation received from the Lockington Lions Club. On the Saturday we arrived in time for Josh at Providore on Hopetoun Café, to spoil us with his amazing culinary skills . He then recommended us to the Carriages Winery which took everyone by

surprise by its presentation and magnificent wines. On the Sunday, we were hosted by the Lions Club for morning tea and lunch at the Heritage Centre. In between times, we were given a tour and a commentary of the town and its history by the one and only Des Pentreath, who explained and showed us what a true community the people of Lockington are proud to be part of. The achievements of all the volunteers in this town is outstanding. The Rotary Club of

Essendon North have been assisting the Lockington community for some 18 months now, and after Des explained how the your community is so service orientated, we hope that our Rotary Club can assist your township and its people for years to come.

Yours in Community Service,

Ben DeBolfo, PP Essendon North Rotary Club.

Lockington golfers have commenced travelling the District Tournament

circuit, with 9 players at Rochester’s four ball last Friday. Congratulations to Ian Haines, who was in the winner’s circle, while Grant Humbert finished 3rd.

While there was no play last Wednesday for the ladies due to the weather, they will be all looking

forward to play this Wednesday for the first round of the Club Championships.
