WAS
MORE THAN A FEAST
Bill
Keenan serenades, Approximately 100 people, including Graeme & Marita
Chappel back from Lockington Heritage Centre on Sunday, May 24. The ladies as usual were the hard workers in the kitchen,
providing a variety of soups, followed by vegetables to accompany the
assortment of yummy family pies, like Rabbit, Chicken, Steak & Kidney,
Beef & Mushroom, etc. provided by Pentreath’s, then followed an
array of delectable desserts. Forget the waist
line for a night! Enjoyable music was supplied by our local Rupe Adams and
Kerran Keats of Echuca, with Lions member, Bill Keenan singing a few great
songs also. Jim and Alison
Mitchell were the lucky and well deserved winners of the hamper raffle, which
overflowed a wheel barrow, and Colleen Curran won the meat.

LOCKINGTON
& DISTRICT LIVING HERITAGE COMPLEX
Website:
Heritage
Complex Web Site Hello
Everyone! DOWN Readers
may remember the initial article written about the Lockington Universal
Store some weeks ago, in which Marie Gordon recalled that the library
agency had been established there when the store was owned by Cliff
and Dorrie Gartside. I was doing some sorting of items at
the Complex last weekend when I came across a page from the Rochester Irrigator, Wednesday,
August 9, 1961. It had been given to us some years ago
and, just by chance, the very first item on
the page was headed “New Library Opens at Lockington.” I
thought you might like to read about it. “The
first library in the Rochester Shire since the shire’s admission into
the Echuca Regional Library service opened at Lockington last week. It will
be a deposit library at the store of C. and D. M. Gartside. Stocked
with 700 books, it will rank with Bunnaloo as the largest deposit library
in the service. The initial supply of books was taken to Lockington by the
regional librarian (Mr P. Ralph) and members of the library committee. Cr. G.
B. Haines reported to the August meeting of the Rochester Shire Council on
the above arrangements.” Other
interesting items appeared across the page. An early
visit was anticipated from a Its purpose was in relation to the
Common Market. It was expected that, on Sunday 13 August, Mr J. E. Green,
dairy supervisor, of an
inspection of Mr P. Taylor’s Lockington dairy farm. The
district was mourning the loss of a well known and well respected Lockington
community member, Mrs Ellen Park, who had passed away in The
Lockington Bowling Club Associates had held their annual meeting, the
highlight being the president’s presentation of the pennant won in
inter-club matches. The
president (Miss Seiersen) reported on a successful year and congratulated the
ladies on the way they had worked, making particular mention of the secretary (Mrs Dwyer). The
Lockington tennis Club had also held its annual meeting, with Mr I. Ham and
Mr R. Pledge having succeeded Mr W. Watts and Mr G. Chapman respectively as
president and secretary. The Club
sought the support of young people in the forthcoming season and urged intending
members to hand in their names at the earliest. Lockington
footballers ranked second to Mathoura on the Echuca Football League
premiership points list, and there was a quarter by quarter description of
the previous Saturday’s play when Mathoura had defeated Lockington; 12
goals 9 points to Lockington’s 6 goals 14 points. Best
players for Lockington were T. Vick, P. Evans, R. Perks, J. Hann, J.
Harrison, R. Boysen, P. Taylor and W. Clohesy. The
Lockington Advance Association had received a negative response to its
request that revenue received from stock yard dues be spent on the Lockington
yards, but the Rochester Shire Council had agreed to connect the water mains
in The
Association’s requests for street lighting, and the continuation of A
meeting had been convened to discuss re-forming a Lockington branch of the
Country Party. An affirmative decision saw the election of Mr G. Haines as
president and Mr W. Williams as secretary. G. C.
Roe of Lockington advertised a “Big Clearance in Winter Stock”,
with prices
ranging from Boys’ School Caps @ 1shilling (10 cents!!) to
Gents’ Pullovers from £2/ 19/ 11 (about $6) to £3/19/11 (about $8). Johns’
Bakery of Lockington solicited “the favour of your recommendation and
patronage”, and Lockington Motors advised readers to take the opportunity
of procuring the Vicon Lely Hay Rakes which were then available. For added emphasis, another line read
‘Remember, for the last four seasons, they have not been. I
enjoyed reading about the Lockington of almost fifty years ago. I hope
that you did too. ‘Bye
until next time, Marg O’Brien. LBU UNDER 14 FOOTBALL Results
– 16/5/09 LBU had
a big win on its home ground against Stanhope-Girgarre. Odin

weekend LBU played a hard fought match against Colbinabbin. The
first quarter LBU had most of the play and led at quarter time, but in the
second quarter Colbinabbin came back and played good football and LBU had a
real match on their hands. LBU
coach Small gave the boys a big rev up at half time and they came out full of

able to break away. Final scores LBU 11;11 to Colbinabbin
