"Giles - Glenelg River Trip"

December 26 - 30 / 1999

I Went Canoeing on the Glenelg River.

When Dad and I were going there we hit a bad rain storm. We were stopped by a police lady, she said we had to drive eighty kilometres extra, because of an accident. But we used a map and went on dirt tracks.

That evening all the others arrived. There was Christopher, Andrew, David, Sue, Barbara, Lionel, Robert, Peter, Maria, Nichole, Dad and myself. We camped at Moleside Creek by the Glenelg River.

At a Landing on the first Day

In the morning we got ready. Some of us canoed while others walked. Those who canoed had to pack all their stuff in either plastic bags or barrels. Our canoe had a top on it so we had to pack in plastic bags, apart from one small barrel. The were three canoes and one kayak. Nichole was in the kayak. Andrew and Christopher were in a canoe, Barbara and Lionel were in a canoe and Daddy and I were in a canoe. We set off paddling on Monday. Nichole kept going the wrong way in the kayak. She even ran into us.

On the first day water leaked into our boat until were put sticky tape on a crack in the side of the canoe, that was under the water. No water leaked into the canoe after the tape was stuck to the canoe.

The walkers set out on the Great South West Walk. They were to meet us in the evening. They used a GPS (Global Positioning System) to find their way to the campsite.

We saw some strange looking bearded ducks. Barbara and Lionel said they were musk ducks. (See references to find more about musk ducks.) Also there were swans sitting on nests in the river. While at a campsite in the evening we saw a bandicoot.

Most days it was wet and windy. On one day it was sunny for a short time, so we went swimming. I still wore my wetsuit.

One morning we took the walkers across the river so we could all go to the Princess Margaret Rose Caves. I did but did not like the caves. I did like them because they were interesting. But I did not like them because they were cold. If they were hot they would ruin because the rocks would dry and crumble. (See references to find more about the Princess Margaret Rose Caves)

After four days of paddling we reached Nelson and finished the trip.

It was fun!
