24 HOUR SWIM ~ Fundraiser for the Lara Secondary College Library (2004/5 Season)

Our inaugural 24 Marathon Swim was conducted in 1982.

In 2004/5, the 24 hour swim was a huge success.  A huge thankyou must go to John Peterson who organised us all so well.  John didn't sleep at all during the swim and then went and worked at the Little River Primary School Fair ~ so what a huge day he had!

John had plenty of helpers on the night, with lap counting and with people helping out with food ~ so if you took along a soup - thankyou very much.  A big thankyou to Louise Slee who brought two huge bowls of fried rice and to Mr. DJ Greg for running the disco.

Thankyou to Des who started us on our journey of 1754 laps (87.7km) and to City of Greater Geelong Councillor Tony Ansett, who got into the act and swam our second lap.

Thankyou to all swimmers from Under 8s, right up to our seniors and even some old members who got us through the night.  Who could forget the spectacle of club legend, June Richardson, leading the flotilla of swimmers down the last lap and tiny Hannah Andrews with determination getting to the wall with her breaststroke?  For me that summed up the whole reason for the challenge we took up and made it all worthwhile.

We had some great support from some Lara businesses:

  • Lara Newsagency
  • Lara Sporting Club
  • Lara Lions Club
  • Lara Dentists
  • Lara Hardware
  • Bruno's Pizza (who helped with some pizza during the night), and
  • DJ Sound (Steven Cole) for the disco gear.

Councillor Ansett gave us a fantastic donation of $1000 from his discretionary fund.  With sponsorship, donations, money club members paid to swim etc, we will be donating around $2200 to the Lara Secondary College Library.

Well done to all!
