Youth of the Year 2010-11

The Lions Club of Lara held its Club Youth of the Year contest last Monday evening 18 Oct 10 rather than in the February of the new year.

This was due to the MD Convention being held earlier than normal in Launceston which was also hosting the final of the Youth of the Year.

Three competitors battled it out at the public speaking part which is what the Lions witness. This represents only 20% of the marks required to be the winner. All three candidates were interviewed earlier during the afternoon for the 80% of the marks available.

District 201V2 Convention

The Lions Club of Lara's Children's Charity Network 201V2 Literacy Project got up at the Lions District 201V2 Convention on the afternoon of Saturday 7 Nov 09.

The Club is finally getting to the end of the procedural red tape to get this project adopted nationally. The next step is to present the project to the Mutiple District Convention in Mildura in 2010. Meanwhile, the Club visits within Lions District 201V2 will continue with continuing positive outcomes.

Margaret Clark - Author

Author and guest speaker, Margaret Clark, spoke to us on our July 09 Dinner Meeting about how she gets the children to express themselves during her workshops at the three Lara primary schools for which we are extremely grateful. Margaret explained that she would take a topic and ask the children 'what if' and give them a scenario and encourage them to use their imaginations to make a story. This is all part of the Children's Charity Network and illustrates why this project is so very important and why we must ensure that Lions take on this project Australia wide.

Lions Youth of the Year Quest

The Lions Youth of the Year Quest is a project of the Lions Clubs of Australia and Papua New Guinea. The Quest is designed to encourage student interest in leadership and the qualities required to take an active and constructive role in community. It does this by selecting an outstanding young person from candidates throughout Australia to travel overseas and act as an ambassador for Lions Clubs International Multiple Districts 201.

The Quest seeks a high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievement in it's potential winners. By emphasising these qualities it hopes to provide outstanding role models for the youth of Australia and an overall increase in the confidence of participants.

For further details, refer to the Lions Youth of the Year Quest.

2006 - Shermika

Shermika Blackie, 2006 Lara Lions Club Youth of the YearA year 12 student from Sacred Heart College won the Lara Lions Club Youth of the Year award on Friday, 24 February 2006, progressing to compete in the District competition.

Shermika, who moved to Geelong from Kyneton in 2006, gave a speech on 'community', answered impromptu questions and took part in an interview, also winning the best speaker award. In the future, Shermika would like to work for the UN setting up democracy in war-torn areas.

2004 - Elizabeth

The Club attracted 5 entrants in 2004 and the winner was Elizabeth from Sacred Heart.

Lara hosted the Zone 3 Final which, according to the visitors was one of the best ever staged. The Hamlyn Heights entrant won the overall event, with the Lara representative Elizabeth winning the Public Speaking section. Special tribute and thanks to Lions Steve Butyn and Lawrie Plowman, for without their dedication and efforts, both the Club's and the Zone Final events would not have been as successful as they were.
