Lara Lions Club launched their 'Lara
Beautification Project' on Tree
Day in 2003. Together with the City of Greater Geelong Parks Management
Unit, local businesses and residents, they continue to plant colourful,
hardy and bird-friendly native species along major roads in Lara.
The project really got moving with door knocking and planning under the Immediate Past President John Frame.
Stage 1 commenced with the planting of trees in Forest Road, on the 27 July 2003. The planting was attended by Her Worship the Mayor, Cr. Barbara Abley, Deputy Mayor and local Councillor Tony Ansett, V2 Environment Chairman, Mary Harlow and Blood Toyota Geelong Dealer Principal Darren Muir.
Station Lake Road was chosen for Stage 2 which got underway with the planting of trees on 28 September 2003. Again we had helpers from the community including children.
This project has many stages and will continue for some years until all the major roads and some other identified arterial roads around Lara have been planted.
Organisers factored site maintenance and an on-going supply of trees into their planning. Lara Lions President Jeff Cahn said, "We contacted local residents, who volunteered to undertake the longer term watering of trees and to help with planting. In support of this project, Roirama Nursery are also supplying native trees to us at cost price."
In late 2003, the Lara Community won 8 categories of Tidy Town Awards for South Western Victoria. Many of these were for the Lara Beautification Project!

Mayor Barbara Abley, Deputy Mayor Tony
Ansett, members of
Lara Lions Club
and Lara Community show how to make good use of a water
truck in 2003!
Since the initial plantings in 2003,
this water tanker was purchased
by the Lions Club of Lara with the assistance of a Commonwealth
Government grant. New plantings can now be watered by Lions during hot
spells of weather.
The tanker is also available for use by the Lara Fire Brigade if and
when necessary.
